Controller setup - will this work?

by Bill Met » Fri, 21 Jun 2002 03:39:55

After far too long a time away, I've decided to get back into the
wonderful world of sim-racing.  My current system is running XP Pro.  I
have an old original model TSW who's wheel is really worn out.  The
pedals are fine though.  What I was thinking was to put DK pots in the
TSW pedals and connect the unit via a Rockfire/Radio Shack USB adapter to
one USB port.  I could then hook up a Logitech Momo wheel as another
controller to the other USB port.

OK, I know what you're thinking.  Just send the wheel back to TSW for
repairs or send my pedals in to get them rewired for the Momo.  Well,
A) I've never tried force feedback so I'm not ever certain I'll like it
and B) if I don't like FF then I'd like to get the TSW upgraded to a
real Momo wheel, paddle shifters, etc... which would mean the pedals
would have to go back a second time to get the original wiring put back.

So anyway, would my idea of TSW pedals via an adapter plus a Logitech Momo
as a second controller work?  I know all the Papy sims support multiple
controllers.  How about F12002?  Any word on GP4?

Thanks,
Bill

F1 2002 definitely supports 2 controllers. I have a BRD Sim Classic wheel
and Speed7 pedals connected via USB as one controller and a USB RS Shifter
connected as a second one. F1 2002 recognises both controllers.

I took the plunge and snipped the wires to the Momo pedals, then connected
them to the pots on my TSW pedal rig.  Now my Momo wheel and TSW2 pedals are
all on controller 1.  I left the clutch on contoller 2 which uses the
Rockfire USB adapter.  My OS is Windows XP Home.

I also spent the extra bucks and got the TE Momo pedal pads.  Together with
the Momo wheel you can't beat the look - especially when you're sitting in a
Ferrari!  E-mail me if you want specifics.  I don't use the clutch too much
so I haven't checked to see if it (controller 2) is recognized in F1-2002 or
GP4.  I'll mail you tonight and let you know...

Regarding the feel of the force feedback from the Momo wheel - it ROCKS.
I've tried them all.  It's solid and feels great.  In F1-2002 you can feel
everything.  I could never go back to non-force feedback.  When I bought the
wheel at Best Buy I opted for the 2 year replacement warranty as well in
case anything breaks.

In my opinion the Momo Wheel/TSW pedal combination (with pads, of course!)
is an excellent combination.  You won't be disappointed - go ahead and
either wire them or get them wired together.  Dave Jr and Sr will take care
to get everything just right if you opt to send them in.  Before I had a
true analog clutch they built me a custom clutch rig with an on/off switch
that I could move up and down the axis so the clutch engaged where I wanted
it to.  Recently I sent my pedal rig back in because I was getting "jitters"
in my raw data.  TE totally refurbed my pedals for free - I paid for the
pots, but they put new wiring and springs in and a new plastic cover on the
pedals as well.  I've always been very impressed with their work.

Good luck.  I'll get back to you regarding the 2 controller Q.

David, David, David,

Not to deny TSW any well-deserved revenue, but why did you "spring for the
extra bucks" to buy TSW-sourced MOMO pedal pads when yer MOMO *came* with
MOMO pedal pads...that fit almost exactly--no hacksaws, drills, files,
blow-torches, or arc welders neccessary.  A couple-three washers and they
bolt right up!

Bill,

I sent my new MOMO wheel and old TSW pedals back to TSW and Bill, Jr. did an
absolutely fabulous job of mating the two together, no problems, just an
incredible feeling of the best FF wheel with sensitive...and, more
importantly...controllable pedals.  I've been setting new PBs every time out
with this combo.  Highly recommended.

I'm a freak - I dunno!?  I really dig the TE Momo pads.  The stock Logitech
pads are cool for sure, but not as cool as mine ;)  Anyways that was a time
when the cash flow was doing pretty good...  I've drooled many times over
that Momo wheel on TE's website wondering how I could connect it to my
Logitech Momo rig, hehe.  That's extreme - and it'll never happen - but it
would be damn cool!

One thing I know about F1 2002 just from the demo - the Force Feedback is
simply AMAZING! This is what FF has been all hyped up to be since it was
introduced. They make brilliant use of FF to make you actually feel like you
are driving the car.

It's a 15-Pin D gameport to USB adapter - with preset controller modes such
as 2-4 axis 4 buttons, 2 axis 8 buttons, etc.
