N2 Modem Play - Painted Cars

N2 Modem Play - Painted Cars

by Jim DeNik » Sun, 12 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I race another person by modem, and both of us have painted our cars how we
like them. He sent me his car over the modem, I placed it in the cars
directory, and he did the same with my car. We both named the cars (mine
being J_DENIKE.CAR, and his being D_DENIKE.CAR). We placed the car files in
the MULTI.LST list, and connected. Knowing that if he calls me I will have
the 1st car on the list, and him the second. When he calls me, he does
indeed have the second car, but he is also listed as "Jim DeNike". So it
looks as though J DeNike is racing J DeNike.

What is the proper way to do this so we both have our correct car AND
correct names?

Also, when racing over the modem, the only option I have for car groups is
MULTI, is there a way to have one for when I am the host, such as MULTI,
and another one that I would use that could be used when I am the caller
(such as MULTI2.LST). A side question to this, if my MULTI.LST file is
different from the caller, which one is used?

When racing with the F2 screen active, sometimes I am able to see second by
second where people are in relation to me, most of the times I am only able
to get an update when the other cars cross the start/finish line. Should
the constant updating in F2 be working all of the time?

Thank you,

Jim,

After a little trial and error, myself and a friend of mine figured out
the complex multi-player car problem.  ;-)  For the answering machine, the
entry list is straightforward... the answerers car is first and the
dialers car is second in the list and all pertinent information (driver
name and car number) is as it should be.

However, on the dialing machine.... the entry list on the dialers
machine MUST also have the answerers car FIRST in the list and then the
dialers car second.  But the information must be altered just a little
bit.  The drivers' names must be reversed... so, in your case...for the
dialer, he would have your car first in his entry list with your number,
but it would have HIS name listed.  The second car in his list would be
his car with his number but YOUR name.

When the entry lists are set up like this and you go into a race, you
will be in your car... your friend will be in his.... and the names and
car numbers on the leader board will be correct and will correspond with
the proper car.

   Hope this helps.

I don't know what is truly correct but when I race my brother, him
being the caller, he leaves his name at the top of the list and only
swaps the painted cars, the pcx files only, and then the race gets
reported correctly.  I don't know if there is s better way but this
does work.  Can't say about the rest.  If you should find out anything
else please post it here.  Good Luck.

I'll take this easy one...  The F2 box works in two modes:
everyone's time behind the leader updated at the S/F line (the old
method) or time +/- the player's car updated continuously.  Toggle
between the two modes by hitting the ENTER key when the F2 box is
displayed.

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Jim - sorry about the way entry lists work in multiplayer; the entry list
design didn't come together in time to make the extensions we wanted to do
for multiplayer.  The NRO design team is aware of this problem and they
should be introducing enhanced multiplayer entry lists with the release of
NRO.
The new entry lists should prove more flexible for multiplayer in the long
run, but it will take a bit more work to put that flexibility to use.

If you've got different entry lists selected, you should see the correct
driver names on both sides (each dialer's name comes from their first entry
in MULTI.LST, and the names should be the same on each machine).  Driver
numbers and graphics may not match on the two machines; however,
information on each machine is self-consistent.    Also, if you're running
more than two human players and you send chat to a specific user by car
number, your chat should only be seen on the remote machine you requested
even if the car numbers aren't the same across machines.

The relative time display for F2 is toggled on and off when you hit the
<Enter> key while F2 is displayed.

The answerer always gets the first car in the list, the dialer the second.
You need to setup the dialer's list so the answerer's car is first and the
dialer's is second. If you take turns dialing each other, then you need two
lists.

During the beta, it seemed like the answer's list is used, except for the
name on the second car. We ran into problems if the dialer didn't have one
of the cars on the answerer's list. This might have changed in the release.

The F2 screen has two modes. One always gets you the last split time at the
s/f line. The other gives you instantaneous split times. Hit Enter to
toggle between the two modes.
