Millenium version of nascar

by c.scot » Tue, 20 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I have an OEM version of the matrox millenium, hence I never got the CD
which comes with the retail version. Is there anyone out there who knows
where I can obtain the special accl. version of nascar which is on this
cd. I have tried matrox but they say my card is unsupported and won't
supply me with the CD.

Thanks in advance

Chris

I have the same problem. I wrote Matrox and sent the same e-mail to two
departments (sales and tech support). I received the following two responses:

Sales department: "Sure, you can buy it from us for $49 US!".
Tech department: "Sorry, we only sell it with our retail card".

Either way, it blows. I've already spent like $85 on the sim (3.5" VGA
version + CD-ROM SVGA version). They give it away FREE with their video
card... you'd think they'd toss it to me for $15 or so. If it's truly an
optimized version of NASCAR, then I WANT IT!!! But not that bad.

It's for real. It's a 471kb ZIP file that unzips into a new NASCAR.EXE.
When you start up NASCAR, it displays "1.21-MX1". The Matrox FTP address is:

http://www.matrox.com/mgaweb/ftp_mutl.htm

Scroll down the list and look for nascar.zip.

I did some framerate benchmarking with the following vitals:

P133 w/Triton chipset
16meg EDO, 256k pipeline burst
Matrox Millennium 2mb WRAM
ALL textures on, asphalt on auto, 38 cars ahead, 38 behind,
7 heard.

Vanilla NASCAR: 11 fps
 Matrox NASCAR: 14 fps

Since I really don't care for grass and asphalt textures anyway,
I turned them off and put "wall" on auto:

Vanilla NASCAR: 14 fps
 Matrox NASCAR: 20 fps

As you can see, there are marked differences between the versions. If
you have a Matrox Mill, definitely go for it! Naturally, it won't affect
Hawaii since multi.exe is a separate executable.

Someone recently stated that there is a patch for Nascar that
updates the CD-ROM version you have to the Millenium optimized
version. I don't know where it is though...
