(Q) Painting Cars in GPL - HELP!!!!!

by John Simmo » Thu, 11 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I've tried time and again to produce a 24-bit car bitmap that winmip will
not ***on.  I need help as soon as possible because of a special
project I'm working on for my GPL league.

I keep getting "Runtime error '6'" when I try to convert it back to a mip
file with the WinMip utility.  If anyone out there uses Photoshop 5.0
(not 3.0 or 4.0) and has succeeded in doing this, please let me know what
I might be doing wrong.

As far as 4-bit BMP files, Photoshop appears to only allow 16 colors in
those files and this destroys the intended color.

By the way, Adobe has released the 5.02 update and it's available on
their web page.

I have tried and tried also, used photoshop, paint everything, always get
it, i don't know how you may be able to do it because it would be sweet to
have 24 bit graphics, much more color.  By the way, 4 bit is 16 colors,
thats why photohshop doesnt allow more than 16 colors for 4 bit,
(2x2x2x2=16, just like
2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2=16,777,216 which is how many
colors used in 24bit, I know you already know this but in your post it
sounds like you are windering why a 4bit image only allows 16 colors)

Here's the scoop.

1) I convert the mip to a bmp.
2) I load the bmp into Photoshop 5.02.
3) I change the file "mode" to RGB.
3) I make some changes (change color, add numbers).
4) I "flatten the image" so that I can save it as a
   bmp file again.
5) I convert it from bmp to mip.
6) Copy the new mip file to the appropriate car
   directory.

When I see the car in GPL, it is black from most angles.  I saved a
replay at Watkins Glen because it allows you to get a good look at the
car up close from just about any angle. As it approacjes the camera, it
looks black.  As it goes by, you can see the intended color 9and the car
number, but it turns black again as it goes away.  It's almost like I'm
looking at it through a thin black mesh.

What the hell causes this?  Am I going to have to uninstall Photoshop 5
and regress back to 3.0 to get my cars painted?  Somehow, I think I'm
missing a critical step or configuration setting somewhere in Photoshop.

complete seperate different....VERY VERY VERY VERY DIFFERENT
formats.......understand?......now until papyrus changes thier format and
someone comes up with a 24 bit color mip editor....you will continue to look
at the runtime overflow error message......do you understand what your

Look you freak of nature, stop responding to this thread.  You're NOT
helping, and you're certainly annoying the hell out of me.  Photoshop3
*works*, Photoshop5 *doesn't*. Do YOU understand?  Have you ever used
Photoshop?  I didn't think so...

(Q) Painting Cars in GPL - HELP!!!!!

I suppose you have sort of bmp-compression enabled in Photoshop 5. WinMip
accepts 4-bit (16 colors) and 24-bit uncompressed bmps as input. The 24-bit
bmps are automotically converted to 15-bit re. 16-bit mips which can be used in
GPL as replacement for the 4-bit mips.

However I d recommend to use for GPL file conversions GPLBatch instead of
WinMip, for it keeps other file settings intact.

GPLBatch can be downloaded at http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Cheers!

I use it all the time.....what really bugs me about guys like you is that you
claim to have any knowledge at all about anything.and if you want me to stop
replying to this 'thread'.....keep your runtime overflow myopic views in
private e-mail.Guys like you always look for some place to make a silk purse
from a sow's ear and end up making alligator shoelaces.(funny thing is...if
you ever take the time to read the readme files for software as much as you
relish in reading posts from here, you wouldnt need this stinking forum to ask
for help)
