Actually, the PS2 "mushroom" isn't so bad once you get used to moving your
fingers in one-micron increments, and the latency is better than many USB
wheels. (It also has a smoother on-center feel than some of the "other"
gamepads) I was just driving around one of our road courses with an
extremely greasy setup--countersteering and throttle modulation (with the
right stick as gas/brake) isn't so bad, but I miss being able to
occasionally right-foot brake when trying to slow down when the car is
resisting pointing down the track... One setup that I find works okay for
more two-foot braking is throttle on right stick up, brake on R1 (pressure).
I could imagine doing other tricks like making the pressure readout of the
downshift button act as an extra throttle for synched downshifting without
an auto throttle blipper.
