Video Cards

by cgenn2 » Sun, 27 May 2001 01:50:33

I know this question has been raised many times before so sorry beforehand.

I want to upgrade my video card.

My System:

PIII 600
256ram
voodoo3 3000

I play GPL and N4. I would like a newer card to get better frame in N4 but
not hurt the performance of GPL. Geforce 3 would be nice but to much money
and it sounds like there are a few issues with it. Geforce 2ulta sounds nice
but that seem a little pricey also. What would be a cheaper card that is
faster than my voodoo? Is it worth buying a V5 even though there is no
support for it?

Thanks,

Chris G.

Read my reply to your other post asking the same question. The V5 is
nice for it's FSAA, but if you want speed for N4 then go with a
Geforce2 for now. You don't need an Ultra unless you are going to run
at very high res.

At the age of GPL I don't think you will hurt it with any newer technology
card. I have a friend that runs n4 on a similar system to yours with a
Geforce MX (5.5ns version) and is happy with it.  If you wanted to spend a
little more maybe a Geforce2 Pro.  I personally would go  with the MX and
take the extra money and go for a CPU upgrade. Usually I would say upgrade
your CPU first but I know how fuzzy the V3 looks in D3D.  I personally would
not buy a card from a dead company, but If you have an older game that only
runs in glide it would be an option if you get it cheap enough.  Then again
take the extra cash and go for a cpu upgrade.

I'd suggest upgrading the CPU to something faster before I dumped the
voodoo3.

I suggest something like the Hercules 4500 64mb with the new Kyro II
chipset.  V3 cards are really bad with Nascar Racing 4, so if it's your
primary racing game I suggest you dump it first.  You will not gain really
much for GPL because the title itself has reached a performance cap.

IMHO the best performance/price card these days are the GeForce GTS II Pro
cards, such as the Hercules Prophet II GTS Pro.

When I did a search for that card on Pricewatch just now it is over
$300.00. You can get an Asus V7700 for under $150.00. The only thing
the Pro has is 32mb more memory, which comes with no performance
increase unless you compare the two at very high res.

Jagg if you want a GF2GTS & not an MX I have a *brand new* Full retail
boxed version, never used. For details please email me as this certainly
aint rec.autos.forsale.sims...lol Sorry all but I'd rather tell Jagg about
it then buy
an MX that isn't close to the GTS version!! Please excuse my OT post!!
Cheers Thom_j.

I am considering buying that card. Do you know of anyone who has
successfully run GPL with it online? (IMHO, this is all that *really*
matters). I'd hate to have to buy the wrong card.

Um, this is incorrect.

The Pro cards perform very closely to the Ultra cards at a lot less money.

I bought mine BEFORE the price drops, and it was only $299.

I'm getting the card next week.  I'll write a report on the NG for GPL/N4.
