3Dfx Patch for N2!!!

by <Aaro.. » Sun, 26 Oct 1997 04:00:00

I had heard on the net that 3Dfx...the company...was making a patch for
Nascar2 so I decided to E-Mail Papyrus about it....below is my mail I sent
to Papy and their reply:

>cc:  (bcc: PR)
>Subject: 3Dfx patch for Nascar2?
>Is there any future plans for a 3Dfx patch for Nascar2?  It is really
>needed.
>I've also heard rumors that 3Dfx....the company....is making their own
>patch
>for Nascar2 and all it will need is a thumbs-up by Papy.  Any truth to
that?
>Thanks,
>Aaron
Their reply:
>really good question -- 3dfx already has a thumbs-up from Papyrus to
>develop
>the patch. There is no estimated ship date, but 3dfx is working on it.
>would
>you like to be on the list of folks to receive our press releases, to stay
up
>to date on our stuff?
>Erica
>Papyrus

This isn't a joke guys...that is the actual reply I got from Papy.  That is
a major, major announcement IMO.  Are their any Papy reps on this board who
can confirm this?  That is super news to all 3Dfx owners who will now be
able to play the best racing game on THEIR cards as well.  By the way, the

I emailed 3dfx just a week or so ago and this is what they told me:

>If there were enough users demanding support I believe 3Dfx support
>could (slight chance) happen. Please check our newsgroup

>Regards,

Try that page and see if there is any thing.

Given that it can *almost* be considered a current release, wouldn't
it be possible to get them to patch "CART Racing" or whatever Papy
is calling their recycled ICR2?

Also, given that the 3D code is already in there for Rendition, can
it be that difficult to patch it for 3Dfx (speaking without any
knowledge of what's involved).

3Dfx Patch for N2!!!

According to Papyrus, there are no plans to produce a patch for N2 and
the 3Dfx card.  Papyrus stated that the only patch in the works is the
one planned for SODA.  They said that all future games however, will
support "what's out there", and this includes 3Dfx.

Cheers!

From what I've heard (on the 3dfx newsgroups)  it's actually 3dfx
working on the patch not Papyrus. Papy is said to have has thumbs
up/down final say on its release though.

3Dfx Patch for N2!!!

>>BTW, DOS is dead, accept it.
>Not yet. By far the most impressive 3dfx game (both graphically and
>frame-rate wise) is Jet Fighter 3, a DOS game. When I see comparable
>graphics under Win85 (which I won't until hardware acceleration itself
>gets a lot faster) maybe DOS will be dead, but not until then.

It's created a minor firestorm in the flight sim newsgroup too.
It's like a breath of fresh air to have something so amazing produced
after months of D3D ports that pause and jerk, or run slower than the
unaccelerated versions.

Hopefully it sends a message to companies producing 3D accelerated
titles (the flight sim group has a lot of company representatives
reading, which is nice).

As much as I like all the work that has been done on Flying Corps D3D,
I can't help but imagine how incredible it would've been to have an
accelerated DOS version.
The frame rate was double through DOS right from the start.
We'd be playing a gorgeous sim that would do 35fps at 640x480 on a
Pentium 166, instead of 20fps at 512x384.  Ah well...

Sorry for the rant.
