I've been having a controller problem with GPL and I think it may be Direct
X 8 related. While I'm driving the control input from my Nascar Pro Digital
seems to freeze for a split second every once in a while. This has been
giving me fits as I have been trying to get under the 9:00 mark at
Nurburgring in F2. Help me Obi-Won, Your my only hope.

DX8a is now available from here:
ftp://ftp.clubic.com/pub/logiciel/PatchsLogiciel/DirectX8-433-2.exe it's a
25mb download because it has both win9x and win2000 support, it might fix
your problems. But it sounds more like a dirty pot.

Could be a million things but is probably not dx8.  RA recommends this in
system.ini to help with disk caching glitches:
[386Enh]
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

Also if it is hooked up to a soundcard port check that it is using the
accelerated port driver, and turn down the detail slider.

What they suggest is wrong. I don't know the details, but talk to any
MSCE and they will tell you that doing this with Win98 is a bad thing
and may be detrimental to performance/stability.

[snip]

Double-check under the "Controller IDs" tab that "Poll with interrupts
enabled is NOT checked.  I saw this get changed when I first installed
DX8.
Another potential problem I've seen is having a disconnected controller
in the Controllers list - DX8 or the controller drivers seem to keep
polling for the device.  I just add and remove controllers as needed.

Yep - it does exactly the opposite of what people think it does.  It
doesn't make Windows use the Swapfile less, it just forces swaps to
disk to happen irrespective of whether the system is busy or not -
which could increase the chance of stuttering.

I looked in Controllers and I only have one listed in there. I dont have a
"poll with interupts enabled"  box in my "Controller ID's" tab. I tried
cleaning my pots first but I didnt think this would work since it locks up
all controlls and not just one. I think im going to try DX8a and see if that
helps. This is driving me nuts since it only happens in GPL and nothing
else.

Just delete that line. The only thing you might want to do is create a
permanent fixed size swap file of about 300mb and see if that helps
with your problem.

Is this specific to win95?  I have win98, and I don't have that tab, or I'm
just looking in the wrong place...  Control panel, Game controllers.  I've
looked on the general and advanced tabs.  I've also checked the properties.  It
ain't there...

I was looking at my PC - Win98, DX8.  I think they switched some stuff
around with DX8.  I don't have a PC with 95 setup right now, but I do
remember the option being there somewhere too. My "*** Options"
Control Panel has 2 tabs: "Controllers" and "Controller IDs".  At the
bottom of Controller IDs, in the "Port Driver Assignment" frame, is the
interrupt checkbox.

Hmmm... is mystery ;)...
I'll have to look and see why I seem to have the setting, and some
others don't.  The TM wheel you have is USB, right?  Do you have *no*
joystick port devices?  I've installed the DX8 control panel, but I
know I had the option from the get-go.
My controllers:
SB-Live sound card
ActLabs Force RS
TM Nascar Pro (for the pedals)
MS FF joystick (sims)
Logitech digital JS (FPS movement)
Gravis digital gamepad (for sports games)
Logitech Wingmanteam DXTweak (to manually adjust deadzones and
controller ranges)
So, I've had alot of controller drivers installed - but I don't think
any one of them enabled this checkbox.

You only have the problem in GPL?  How much system memory do you have,
and have you tried disabling replays?  What's your video card, 3d
renderer?  If your wheel is USB, do you have it plugged directly in the
PC, or through a USB hub?  Do you know if your system is sharing
interrupts between the USB ports and another device?
I'd also add the fixed size swapfile - somewhere between 1 and 2x your
system RAM - at least 256 or larger if a specific game needs it (I
remember Unreal liking some 300mb, and people with B17-II are saying
1gig!).

Duh - forgot to ask - do you have only USB devices?  I'm pretty sure
the setting is only relevant to, and enabled for gameport devices.
Since I have several, I see the setting.

Eldred,

No, it's not specific to 95.

Most likely you're stick/wheel is using a gameport driver other than the
standard. You can switch back to standard by selecting it from the drop down
list in the port driver box and then you should see the poll with interrupts
option.
