CMR - W98 Installation problem.

by anne » Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm having a problem installing Colin McRae Rally on W98 (as you might have
guessed from the header....).   Whatever size installation I try, minimum,
medium, full, the installation fails in the data move, quoting error code
113, but no further details.

The only other significant symptom is that the CD drive seems to surge, as
if it's struggling to read the disk.   I don't think it's a problem with the
disk, as a) I can examine it OK with Explorer, and b) I've tried a friend's
copy of the same game, with the same result.   (Before anyone explodes, it
was an original copy!)    Equally, I've been able to install other software
from the same drive, so I don't think it's the drive that's at fault.

So what does that leave?    Has anyone else experienced anything similar or
am I just lucky?

CMR uses an over zealous CD copy protection system (there's actually a blank
gap in the track on the CD), which causes read errors on "sustained reads"
(not my words.... posting in another ng) on some CD-Rom drives. Last hing I
read about this situation (in PC Zone) was that CodeMasters were working on
a batch of "normal" replacement CD's for owners of "affected drives". I'd
say try it on another drive/machine and contact CodeMasters tech support if
it works on the other drive.

Why don't you just try to copy all files to your hard disk? That way
you'll spot any CD read errors.

I've had similar problems although I've never even heard of CMR much less tried
to install it -- when I tried to install NASCAR99, I got a message saying
"SETUP.EXE IS NOT A VALID WIN32 PROGRAM" no matter what I did, it would not
install..... I got it going by using explorer and copying the NR1999 folder from
the cd to the hd - worked fine.....  I also had a problem installing another
game from cd where it would get about 3/4 of the way through one particular file
(a huge .DAT file of some sort) and stop reading - that problem and most likely
the N99 problem were cd-rom driver related (oem 2 speed pos)

Look and see if CMR can be run off the cd as it is - if so, just copy everything
to the hd...........

Thanks everyone, I'm struggling along with a half-installed/half-copied
version, and that'll have to do me for now - thanks again for your time.
