Trouble with my LWFF... :(

by Warlock » Tue, 06 Nov 2001 23:46:39

I recently started having trouble with my cable driven LWFF. It's almost
2 years old and has been overused (thanks to GPL) but has always worked
perfectly and constantly. Suddenly (in GPL), about five minutes into a
race or practice session, I lose all force-feedback. Not even any forces
from the centering spring... just a limp, loose wheel. Sometimes it will
kick back on, but 9 times out of 10 it won't until I get out of GPL and
restart it (not rebooting the computer, just restarting GPL). I have it
hooked up thru the serial port, if that's any help.

Anyone else had this problem, and if so, what didja do to fix it?

Thanks folks...

Warlock!

What's your FF effects set at, in your Game Controllers control panel?  I
had this same problem a long time ago on my (fairly new) wheel.  I asked the
guys at www.wingmanteam.com what was up, and they said the wheel was most
likely overheating due to the FF effects being set too high (well over
100%).  After I reduced this value, I never again saw that problem crop up.
Of course, if you need it set that high, some folks have cut vents in their
wheel enclosure, but that's up to you.  And of course, if everything is set
right and you're *still* getting that problem, I can't help ya...!

It looks like a thermistor cuts the power to the motor when the motor gets too
hot.
Since also thermistors can die (and easily short-ciquitted ;-),  solution should
be possible and cheap.

I'm just working on that, check the LWFF-forum in few days.
