Sidewinder precision problems :( :( :(

I bought a USB Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel and can't get Windows to
recognise it. I followed the installation instructions that came with it and
the "Sidewinder Central" software seems to run OK, but the wheel just won't
work.

Can someone PLEASE help me here? Very depressing :(

TIA,
Jim

Here's the spec:

In the "*** Options" control panel (note: it's not called "Game
Controllers" like in the MS documentation) there are two tabs -
"Controllers" and "Controller IDs". Both are empty. If I start on the
Controller tab and do Add / Add Other / MS Hardware Group / MS Sidewinder
Precision Racing Wheel, then the drivers seem to install successfully. When
I hit Finish and return to the Controller tab, it's still blank.

DXDiag.exe says I'm running Win 98 version 4.10, build 1998 and DirectX 8.0
(4.08.00.0400).

Device Manager says I've an "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host
Controller" and a "USB Root Hub" installed with no problems.

Device Manager also seems to think I have two copies of MS Sidewinder
Precision Racing Wheel installed in "Sound video and game controllers", as
well as a Microsoft Sidewinder Virtual Keyboard (dunno where that came from,
wasn't there before I started all this!). I've tried removing them and
reinstalling, but no luck.

One other thing I've already tried is to replace the joystick.inf file with
one from the Win98 CD, this didn't help either.

Help please?

Do you have Colin McRae 2 installed?

I had CMR2 demo installed a while back, and uninstalled it. Could that have
messed things up? How can I check/fix it? TIA, Simon!

The paperclip trick as mentioned before on RAS didn't seem to work for me,
BTW.

Thanks
Jim

Whoop! CMR2 demo was the culprit - it installed its own version of hid.dll.
I replaced it with the one from the Win98 CD and bad-a-bing! I'm all wheeled
up :0)

Thanks loads

Glad you got it working :)  I e-mailed codemasters about it yesterday and
just now got a reply suggesting the same fix you used, so I guess they do
know about it.  Which means I can install CMR2 again without worry :)

It worked.  Just installed CMR2, and the wheel dissappeared from the
controller list.  Used system file checker to replace hid.dll and when the
system rebooted the wheel was back again :)

makes me wonder what's so special about CMR that it needs a new version of
hid.dll - don't see why they couldn't just use the standard one

ah well :)
