Solicitation for suggestions/wishes - general purpose GPL utility program

I've already started forming the list for the initial feature set and
would like to hear from GPL lovers as to what sort of tools and
features they've wished they had.

Several things have already been provided already to the GPL community
such as GRE, Replay Analyzer, Carset Manager, etc.  I want to
implement some equivalent or enhanced features plus some more into one
comprehensive application.

One thing I want to be able to do is archive setups and either clone
them individually or into a new Player.  It's really tedious to
migrate setups or to propagate new ones you've acquired into all the
relevant Player directories.

Additionally, besides the functionality of GRE, I want to be able to
graph and report differences and similarities between selected setups.

Also, I want to capture and store exported results, associating them
with the setup utilized to achieve them and to extract data from
replay files such as the top speed achieved in top gear and just where
on the track it occurred.

These are just some of my initial functional items.

Please feel free to follow up on this thread with your own.

This alone would be a very handy utility.  If you get this nailed down but
have problems with other features, I would encourage you to release this
tool by itself.

Doing the same sort of thing with tire temperatures would help a lot in
developing oval setups.  However, I doubt the info is in the replay files
and capturing it live from the game would seem to be a pretty difficult
task.  At least to this non-programmer.

Personally, I'd like to have some type of a season editor- with
allowances for which tracks, point system, number(and maybe which)
drivers participate, and the type of car(GP, F2, F3). Not too
demanding , am I?  :)

hehe Brett, this sounds a bit like a project started by a certain Jack
Rambo, I won't mention the name of that program here tho as ppl tend to get
hysterical when reading the word "GPa*" :))

Seriously tho, it would be great if we got an Interface with a menu-bar (in
Windows-style) where u can get access to ALL useful tools available for GPL,
be it WinVROC, GRE, Track Converter, GPLReplayAnalyser, SpyGirl, GPLcalc,
GPLOMe, as well as a possibility for each user to configure that menu-bar
with further menu-items, for example by adding personal leagues, links etc
there. Of course, this could be done by writing a simple HTML-File and using
that as a shell for windows instead of explorer (for the absolute freaks
:)) ), but it would be handy if we could get it done in a rather
professional way....... maybe just dreaming........ good luck!

Something I'd like to have is a little program that would list the
tracks, and have a check box for having the steering hack on or off for
that track. I find I need it on for Monaco, Mexico and Roen. Just about
every where else I'd rather have it off. It would be nice to have it
preset for each track.

One application that I always wanted for Sim racing and have actually
started to create through Delphi but never finished...  I want to be able to
see a list of files and a text describing what they are..  I.E. and old DOS
BBS.

Example,

Brows to the replay directory and see the list if replays.  Next to each
replay is a text describing what's in it.  Same with the setup files,  See a
list of setups and a text describing them..  The GRE gives us the ability to
associate a text file with the setup,  But you can only see one set up at
any time.  For my application, I'd like to see the setup name and the
associated text.  I don't care much for the setup parameters (for my
application anyhow).

Replay:
GPVL_Brands.rpy.....Very close racing for 10 consecutive laps with the
entire filed.

GPVL_Phoenix.rpy.....Accident free league race.

Setups:
F3_Brands_Short....  1:53's and steady as a rock.  after a Short race I
still have 1 gal. fuel left.

F3_Monza_Long..  Starts to sputter for fule 1/2 lap before the finish line.
A bit loose entering Para..

However, as it stands now,  The replays I have to name them corectly in
order to remember what they were from.  And the setups I sometimes forget
what ones are best for X type of race. (half cured with the GRE).  So,  an
associated text file with the Replays and with the setups would be nice.
Then there's a few other odd things but not nessesary.. IE.. Camera files,
I have so many different ferrari camera files that I don't remember what one
is what.  And the downloaded Mip files,  I have quite a few Asphalt files
that I don't remember what one looks like what.

With the exported files....  I'd love to be able to take all the
information out of a results file and place it in to an access data base.
Then the user could create (if they have access) user modified out put
tables. (cant think of the phrases I'm after).   I've kept some statistics
for my F3 Invitational series on each driver.  Once in a while I'll post
some odd statistics such as how many Ferrari's finished on the lead lap for
the season and other odd stuff.

Be nice to be able to extract the "Odd" information in place it in to a
report rather then manually looking at the results for a season and
calculating things.

Those black bars are not covering up anything.  You could have the
bars removed and all you would see would by your monitor's native color.
if someone expanded the view to fill a screen all the edges would be
lost, possibly even so that the tires and mirrors would be cut-off.
Plus if all this even was possible, do you have the CPU to push 30% to
40% more GPL pixels?

That's a bit beyond my capacity, I'm afraid. <g>  Looking at being
able to consolidate all the available info and files into some useful
database type of application to make a GPL racer's life a little
easier.

> Where might one find this "steering hack" ?

In readme11.txt:

By default, GPL uses a speed-sensitive steering ratio.  At and above
60MPH, the steering ratio specified by your car setup is used.  Below
that speed, your the steering ratio will be set to somewhere between 7:1
and the ratio defined by your car setup.  GPL does this to make it
possible to exit your pit stall when pit road is crowded, and to make
navigating hairpin turns easier.  You can disable this feature by adding
the following two lines to core.ini

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 0       ;

Thanks Pierre, I found the relevant read.me . Just curious now as to
why another poster said they would "prefer to have it off at tracks
other than Monaco, Mexico and Rouen".

On tracks without hairpins, does no steering hack mean better control?
Or is this not a big deal?

Cheers, Wilf

While we're at it, what I would love is for some note taking facility in
the car setups screens so that I can remember what the hell I was
mucking about with the last time I was playing with the car settings,
just like they had in N2.

So...*why* would you want to disable it at Monaco...?  I must have missed the
relevant message...  Or misunderstood the ones I *did* read...<g>
