Appropriate position for slower drivers?

Hi all,

I just started racing NASCAR 2003 Season on line. I've been racing previous
version off-line and decided to give it a shot against real people. So far
it is lots of fun (once you get past the really rude behavior of some
drivers).

I hold a line pretty well and can drive okay in traffic, but I'm not nearly
good enough to finish at the top of  the pack, so my goal right now is to
drive safe and finish the race.  As a result, I will usually get lapped by
the race leaders.  As a slower car, where should I be positioned to let the
faster drivers by? Should I hold a high line and let them pass low or should
I go low and let them pass me high?

It depends on the track.  At the Superspeedways like Daytona, staying
high is probably best.  but if you are up there you run the risk of
scraping the wall and lurching back down into another lane.  So be careful.
A track like Darlington, however, you should be on the bottom especially at
the exits to the turns.  Good Luck...have fun.

I think the most important thing isnt high or low...its how consistent you
line is. Remember, somone lapping u will see u and decide the best way to
get past from a long way back. So, like in all racing.... just hold your
line and dont do anything unexpected :)

Most of the times, go high since the fastest way around the track is on the
bottom.  Like Dave said, Darlington is a different beast.  Also stated, just
pick one and stay there so the leaders will know what you are doing.

As others have stated, generally staying high is best, but it's really nice
when a driver about to be lapped, or passed, will send a "Pass low" or "Pass
high" message.

I have both of those as auto chat message, but not a "Going low", so you're
talking to an experienced lapper here :-)

Correction...I my autochat is actually "Pass left" and "Pass right"   Have
to handle those roadies as well :-)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to think that way.

The biggest thing is not to race the leaders. Roll out of the gas a little
early going in and get on it a little latter coming off to give them a
chance to get by clean.  Like Dan pointed out the worst thing you can do is
run low right till he gets there then go high. I have seen that wipe out
both cars plenty of times..

I've seen these messages from other players. I'm curious how you tell that I
am the one sending it. It has my car number attached, but I can never see
the car number of the car ahead of me. Is there someway to check what the
number of the car you are approaching is.

Okay,  looks like the feedback here is really "be consistent with no
unexpected moves".  I can hold a line pretty well as long I'm not getting
hit by major Areo effects. I do have issues with push when I approach a car
and then end up going high. Same from the rear, car will get loose and will
slip around in the turn. Still working on figuring out how to compensate for
that.

The most appropriate position would be for you to just hold your line, it's
not up to you to make room for faster cars, leaders have to have as much car
control as a lapper. It's always been my belief that as long as the leaders
or faster cars have room to pass, then they should use that room. Obviously
you don't want to pull into the groove in front of faster cars but you also
have to realize that everyone drives different lines at different times. So
I'd say be safe us the F2 function and hold your line, if faster car hits
you, it will tell you alot about his decision making process and his over
all skill. With that said, when he cusses you for not moving, ignore him.
You might also want to set up your autochat keys to announce pass me hi or
low and do like I said...hold your line.

Sometimes it depends on the track or the situation, but the overall golden
rule is to stay high and clear.

The absolute LAST thing you want to do is change your mind at the last
minute.  That's where the majority of major pile-ups will occur.

Most drivers will make a decision on where to pass you long before they get
to you.  Usually, it's low.  Many will announce their intentions, as I do.

Use split-time.

After hitting F2 to show the field, press the space bar.  It will show in
real time who is ahead and behind you.

If you are off the pace then this is the only F2 mode you should consider
using since things can come up on you in a hurry.
