I just got a new system with xp loaded on it, and I can't figure out which
applications and processes are the bare minimum to have running before
starting a sim. Any ideas?

Go here and read his charts on processes you can disable. Make sure you use
the one with internet access or you will lose the stuff you need to get
online.

If you have a reasonable fast machine, I doubt turning off backgroup
processes other then the ones you install yourself will buy you much if
anything.
