Running at 640x480, with pretty much all graphics turned off, I can get
25fps max at Monza with no AI cars. With AI, it drops to around 10-12fps. I
have tried it with a Rendition V1000 card, and performance was about the
same, but probably a bit lower if I remember. Kinda wish I had an 8MB
Thriller lying around just to see the difference it would make!
Clearly I am limited by the CPU-a newer 770 with the 266 or 300MHz PII would
probably do a good deal better. Thank goodness I have another system to play
GPL on (Celeron 300a o'c to 450 with the Voodoo2 12MB) or I would be
screaming the upgrade blues also!
This may not have been the exact comparison you were looking for, but this
will be the only way to get acceptable performance from GPL on a laptop
until someone figures out a way to put a low power, low heat 3Dfx or
Rendition chip into a laptop.
