Stick? F1 Paddle? Buttons? - Simulations Accuracy is it Important?

by JD » Sat, 07 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I often wonder how we talk about the accuracy of the sims we drive only to
use a wheel that is different than the actual gear shift design.  (Obviously
I'm talking about computer simulations and we are all limited by our
finances on the wheel we choose.)   The reason I bought a Saitek RS (I also
returned it) instead of a MS FF, I want a gear shift.   After returning the
Saitek  I've gone back to my Nascar Pro and am patiently waiting for the TM
Nascar Force GT so I can have a stick and buttons.  I like driving a car the
way it was built ie: GPL/Nascar cars use sticks; F1/Champ cars use shifter
or paddles (or buttons).

I'm surprized this debate hasn't come up sooner because I think it is much
easier driving any sim with paddles or buttons as the gear change.  Anytime
you can keep two hands on the wheel you are steadier (or I am anyway) and
it's easier to remain on the line.  What do you think?

Personally, I like using the stick shift.  I have a Formula T2 and the stick is
so close to the wheel it takes me less than a second to shift and get my hand
back on the wheel.  But then again I'm used to driving with one hand.  I guess
it's just driver preference.
