When did F1 change from sequential lever to paddle shifters

When did F1 change from sequential lever to paddle shifters

by Glenn Campbel » Wed, 03 Apr 2002 09:37:18

I'm looking at all the classic add-ons for GP3 and I'm curious as to what
year F1 changed from standard "H" pattern shifting to sequential, and
subsequently to paddle shifters.  I run a complete ACT-LABS setup and need
to know the different methods for the different eras I intend to run.

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

I don't believe F1 ever used a sequential gear lever.  I think they went
from a gated gear box straight to a sequential paddle shifting one.

Thanks for the reply.  Any idea which year the paddles became the norm?

Cheers again,

Actually, they use automatic gearboxes now... and traction control.

Well, they weren't the "norm" in '89 - that was when the semi-auto Ferrari
box was introduced.

They didn't become really common until around '93-'94 - until then, only
Ferrari ('89), Williams ('91), and McLaren ('92) ran them regularly.  Not
sure when Benetton converted over.

I have a Tamiya 1:12 1991 McLaren & it still has a shifter on the right
side. Also a 1993 Lotus which also has a shifter on the right side.

So it probably was a gradual change for each team.

I'm pretty sure at least Patrese was still using a sequential box in '93.

We (in the transmission business) prefer to call them "automated
manuals", to avoid the torque converter "slushbox" connotations...
