Thanks Matt, having seen the slowmo replay I am surprised he never
dislocated his shoulder. Yep the McLaren did look a bit poorly <GG>.

That's true - I believe there are some "restored" classic cars where the
only original part is the chassis registration plate!

You're not too far off the mark there, Michael.

True enough. Also, one of the *very* few "downs" about Goodwood IMO, and for
historic motorsports in general, is that some of the cars are "over-restored". From
reliable sources, I was told that for example the Ferraris never looked that good
when new. 20 layers of clear coating etc doesn't look right. And seeing anodized
aluminium bits on those cars just makes me nauseous.

I can recommend Goodwood to all RAS'ers, and I just can't understand you british
guys who don't go.....A ticket to a rallycoss event in a muddy bog is more expensive
here! My plane ticket put me back 250, then there was the rental car, hotel,
food....and I'll keep going as long as the event is anything like what it was this
year!

You BASTARD, Knutsen!  Stop it, I'm drooling!!

I agree about over-restoring........(I think I am qualified to comment,
being the owner of a couple of 50-year old classic cars).  Some of the
sterile pieces of static machinery (no other way to describe them) that
appear at prestigous concours events world-wide are dreadful in that regard.
Pebble Beach is a typical "over-restorers" dream!

Lol, can't you get old Jack to get you free tickets? :-)

I can well imagine, but hey, even one of our racecars looks better after retirement
than it did on its debut :-)

Just curious - what cars do you own? I have a couple of 30-year+ old
*ahem* not really classic cars which definitely are not over-restored.
In fact, they are more or less junkers right now, but one day, I will
restore them... As soon as I have money *and* time at once, which will
probably be 30 years from now. ;) But hey, that's the beauty of
classic machinery: it's only getting better and more interesting the
older it gets.

Cleaning out the grooves in the tires with toothbrushes is not my idea
of fun either. But with cars used for racing, I can understand the
tendency to over-restore better: you want a car that is fast and
reliable. What's the point of using, say, an original cork gasket
which needs replacing ever so often when you can get a replacement
made of a more modern material? It can be overdone, however.

MG TC and MG YA, Wolfgang.

BK.
Incidentally.....if a "modern material" gasket were used in place of an
original cork gasket, and was detected, the judges would mark it down in a
Concours event.
By "over restored" I'm referring to cars that are finished to a far higher
standard than when they were sitting, brand new, in a showroom.
