Optical Illusion; there was amble room for my foot underneath the nose of that
RA300, my feet are big, and I mean *ample* :-)

Another Matthew (who was fortunate enough to be there!)

Did any one see ITVs program on the Goodwood Festival of Speed this
afternoon.  Surtees was driving the 67 Honda and the front of the car was
incredibly close to the road surface!  There could not have been more than
an inch clearance when the car was not under braking!  Perhaps those low
riders were not such an anomaly.  Either that or we are in the 90s now :)

SRH is not measured at the tip of the car nose.

Having watched "Nine Days in Summer" on Speedvision this past week, I was able
to discern a couple of things. Firstly, the cars seem to be at approximately
3.5- 4.00 inches of ride height (judging from the angle of the rear
half-shafts). Secondly, the front end does get quite close to the ground under
braking. Looks like they used pretty soft spring settings judging from how
much the front end liked to dive.

Thanks Matthew.  I always knew I didn't like you, not because you
contradicted me but because you actually made it to Goodwood. :-)   Was
Surtees in the car when you tried the foot test...I mean we all know what a
big chap he is...

Actually I am well aware that ultra low running cars did not appear in that
era, I have seen enough evidence of that, I was just wondering if the modern
Honda mechanics had adjusted the ride height that low.  But as you report
obviously not.

We're aware of that :-)

Correctly measured varies from car to car, but is most commonly checked
between front wheels and at the end of Chassis. Anyway, these cars were
soft, I could see all of them take a set when they floored it out of the
second bend on the hill....great to see cars with suspension movement!

LOL! Nah:-)
Coming to the Goodwood track race in September? If you do, I guess I owe you a
pint!

No, as far as the very nice Japanese gentleman I talked with could tell me, the
RA300 was even fitted with the original 67 tires!!

Well, they are supposed to race them in September! Can't wait!

Cheers,

Did anyone take any recordings of the Honda at Goodwood??

Patricks sounds for the game are awesome... with one exception - the honda
just doesn't sound right (I'm sure his sound was intended for the brabham)

If no one made a good recording this time (you fools!!!) someone please
record it next time dammit!!!

Anyone care to describe what it actually sounded like???

thanks

Marc

Umm, well, I've got some OK-ish camcorder footage of them zooming past
the house, and also up the hill (the latter you just see hear them,
view was blocked by straw bails :(  )
Sound quality is pretty good.

WRT to accuracy.
Well, the Honda isn't that accurate, but it does sound similar ish to
the Ferrari (IMHO). Except, the Ferrari seems more throaty, whereas
theHonda screams a bit more :)

Patricks Ferrari/Honda noise is VERY VERY accurate. If I remember
correctly, Patrick supplied a Ferrari engine note + a Honda/Ferrari
one. Use the Honda/Ferrari for the Ferrari. Its spooky in how good it
sounds.
YUM!!!!!!
Even better when you are there, cos the camcorder doesn't pick
everything up.

My favourite is still the Ferrari (naturally :)  ), but the Honda
comes close. The Eagle ain't bad. Hmmm, noticing a common factor here,
number of cylinders.
I've got some 'static' Eagle recordings on camcorder from Goodwood
98.
Basically, I was standing behind it as it was being revved. :)

Unable to get any of the 67 cars like that this year :( Maybe next
year.

If I get the chance, I'll try to get this stuff into wav file format.

It will be in about 2 weeks or so when I visit a few mates who have a
TV Card.

Hold on, tell a lie, may be able to try tonight, if I use the
camcorder connector to connect to the computer.
