WSC - put up or shut up.....

While various people can smuggly wax on on how WSC 'will be released
when it released' I think it time we heard more than that. The west
brthers and there admirers are responsible for getting the hype
machine running for the past years, as the proclaimed 'gpl beater.'
Now rumors are flying that the game is in Empire's control and there
will only be a psx2 version, and various other things. Yet people stay
silent. All this would be fine if it werent for the manufactured hype
that makes every little Jonny down the street wait to upgrade his
computer 'when wsc' comes out...and every wasted minute talking about
the game and reading articles about it and listening to the wild
notions of the west brothers. Now it appears they've been hoodwinked
by empire and were suposed to pitty them.....TELL US WHATS GOING ON?

I just don't understand some people. On one hand you get Ilari having to
deal with rumours that arise through whatever filtering of released
information goes in in some people's heads, while on the other hand
usually the same kind of people outright demand info products, as if
they're being owed anything. It's apparently a no win situation.

The Wests themselves have given no more info about their work than what
was given for any other serious sim product out there. If it captured
the imagination of virtual drivers better than other products, tough
luck for others. But the 'hype' takes a mass of people to support and
sustain, you honestly cannot blame only two people being responsible for
it. It's a sociological phenomenon, and the blame for the hype bonfire
continuously burning too strong for its own good is purely on the
shoulders of the community.

While hype can even be good if it brings along the support of the
community (check the upocming Il-2 flight simulation and its forums),
posts like yours tend to turn the hype into irrational anger. Try
imaginining being a developer yourself, no matter how unlikely this may
seem.  How encouraging would it be for you to get messages from a bunch
of nobodies you've never met, demanding from you to show them results of
your work in progress, or beat it? If you're not content with the
situation, that's your own right, but demands such as 'put up or shut
up' are utterly ridiculous to hear from someone with absolutely no
credit to their name.

WSC is still in development - and strange though it may seem - it will be
released when it is finished - and not before (something which Papy, EA, and
Hasbro seem to have forgotten how to do)

There is even a web-cam on one of the West Bro's PC's  and from time to time
you can see them working on it - I wont post the link here as it was
accidental that it became public-knowledge anyway - as it may be one of the
features of the West Racing website - which will be going live with content
in the very near future.

I'd also invite you to read this

http://www.simracingmag.com/wsc/articles/01q3/wsc_latest.shtml

That was about a month ago - and explains what is in progress - and what's
been done.

I do not understand why you feel that the West's owe you anything? What have
you given them? Nothing. Have you made some secret down payment on a
product. No.

You can moan and groan all you like - but the facts are thus

- WSC is being developed by the West Brothers for the PC to be published by
Empire.  There is not strict release date yet - in so far as when it is
finished - it will be published.  (Personally an approach I prefer to "It'll
be out in June" - "Sorry, it's been pushed back till September" - "We'll be
releaseing in January" and  so on and so forth)

- WSC is also being developed for the PS2 - but not by the West Brothers -
and is to be a much more consumer/arcade orientated product.

Now you can moan, groan, shout, and scream all you want. But there's no
point and no need.

Doug.

Well said....
It's not that we mean any harm to the Wests but they were the ones to get
the ball rolling in terms of hype, now they are all quiet suggesting
something is not quite right.
I feel this way only because of the flack Geoff Crammond got for GP3.... so
many people had so many things on their wishlist that when GP3 came out they
said Geoff had failed yet he had included much more in the sim than he had
promised first off which I couldn't understand...

They owe us all.... an answer....they created their own hype and have left
us dangling for some time now... forget a demo, a new screenshot, just a
progress report would be something at this stage.

I disagree with the basic premise that they owe us anything. However I would
like them to continue the level of hype that they started. A progress report
would be very welcome. Since, at least in terms of software, no news is
rarely good news.

I mean, ease up guys!!!  The West Brothers strike out as independent
developers so they don't have to deal with managers and corporate
structure BS, and then they end up with half of RAS on thier asses
like the worst micro-managers I've ever seen ;)....

Damn it Chris and Tony  -  we demand a complete design doc for WSC,
individual tasks, timeline with critical milestones and percentage
completion.  And we want it by Friday - you're already a week late on
your project report ;)!
