Spirit of Speed 1937 - Any opinions?

I recently downloaded the demo of this game and must admit to being somewhat
disappointed with the feel of it. Anybody else have the same thoughts?

The SoS developers should be taken outside and shot.
The SoS boxes should be used for landfill.

Absolutely. But I suppose it's Hasbro, the toy company's
fault. Hasbro sucks w/o end, look what they did with falcon.
SOS 1937 was obviously not ready for release, and there are
bugs over bugs and even missing game parts.

The cars are quite different, but nowhere near authentic.
The dashboard gauges don't work on all cars (fuel!) or don't
show correct values (kph instead of mph, but counting miles
and vice versa) the mirrors only work in 512x384 and
800x600, the game frequently locks up, the fuel consumption
and performance are 'developer-balanced', but way from real,
the performance of the cars doesn't match with the in-game
description (for example the Mercedes 154 is slow in
comparision and a real loser, and the Bonner Special is by
far the best car in the game), the graphics is very nice but
slow, and the multiplayer-feature is completely missing,
although mentioned on the packing. Same goes for the car
setup. At least they could have implemented different
gearings/tires/damping for different courses.
There is no lap-record counter, also.

The KI drivers are idiotically stupid. The same driver
always crashes in the same corners, they ram you and each
other from behind without a moment's hesitation ...

Last, but not least Broadswords website is dead - the last
news was that they're porting the game to Dreamcast. Not one
single word about a patch or delivery of missing features,
nada. Hasbro/Microprose don't even know the game exists ...

Im pissed to hell - such a beautiful idea, and such a load
of shit in the package. The last time I bought a game like
this was the indescribable Outpost from Sierra - and that
was my last Sierra game for years. Hasbro games will
definitively meet the same fate.

The fact that I was immersed for some hours (cursing and
swearing, but immersed) shows IMHO, how much they _could_
have achieved - with four to six months additional
development and QA. I'm sending this posting to broadswords
website also, asking them for an explanation. If they aren't
died of shame in the meantime, that is.

Wow, that was long.

LOL, I talked with a rep from the company several times at length before the
game was released. I specifically mentions how me and some buds were
interested in playing the game online. He never mentioned it would have no
multi-player. What company in it's right mind would release a game like that
without the ability for online play! What are these people thinking?
Unbelievable!

Slot, based on what I understand: when looking at the RELEASED product
there's NO TELLING what they were thinking!!  From what I've heard, I can't
imagine something like that would even be RELEASED!  (... well, there WAS
that eXtreme Paintbrawl fiasco...  As NasRev 1.0...).

Well said, Axel.

Fortunately, I bought the game at a second-hand store, so I did not waste
too much cash.

This is a console game, need I say more. The whole game (NOT sim) is a real
dog. Graphics are pretty grim compared to GPL and SCGT; only 800x600?
Rubbish.

Car handling (if it can be called that) is equally bad. The steering option
on my M$ Force Feedback wheel appears to be either 'on' or 'off', full
steering lock or straight ahead. Crap.

Keep clear of this pap at all costs. If someone offers to give you a copy,
kill them on sight.

Go get Sports Car GT and enjoy a real fun sim.

F.

In the demo, I found that I had to call me wheel a joystick. This took it
out of linear mode and made it very drivable. Now, if I could only get my
Jeep to take a hairpin  corner at 100mph.......

I played the demo and was able to get my old T2 to work fine (after
unchecking the "Poll with interupts..." in the control panel). Both the
steering and the pedals had full graduated control - unlike what some people
have found with the game. Basically it doesn't matter though because the
physics model is very unimpressive. It didn't feel like driving - its
obviously a fudged physics model. Also the frame rate isn't too good on my
PII450 128Mb RAM, AGP TNT 16Mb with all details on. The graphics look OK but
shouldn't be that slow, and only 3 other cars on the track. The sound sucks
too. The game is OK for a vintage race car enthusiast I guess, but not for
any sim/semi-sim enthusiast. I won't be buying it.

Weren't you?
It was the thing were I built my newest pc for.
