GPL - solution for Win2K CTD

GPL - solution for Win2K CTD

SYMPTOM: Under Win2k Professional (SP2), GPL dumps you back to the desktop
after the splash screen.

If you googlize this newsgroup, you'll find dozens of helpful threads
dealing with this issue. Unfortunately, none of the proposed solutions did
the trick for me, but in an uncustomary (not to mention unsettling) moment
of lucidity, I hit upon yet one more candidate to add to the pile.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
- pop up the "properties" dialog for your GPL folder
- on the "General" tab, click the "Advanced..." button
- in the resulting dialog, make sure "For fast searching, allow Indexing
Service to index this folder" is **CHECKED**

- if it IS checked, then never mind, this ain't your problem.

 OTHERWISE...

- click "OK" to dismiss the advanced dialog, and again on the "properties"
dialog
- when asked, choose "apply to this folder, subfolder and files"
(important!).
- cross the fingers of your non-mousing hand, and fire up gpl.exe

I'm sure it's not the only solution, but it's the one which got me back on
my feet...err...wheels.

GPL - solution for Win2K CTD

Not sure about Win2K, but with Windows XP the recommendation would be to
completely turn off the Indexing Service because it is using resources to
track every file change.  It is like the fast searching which is installed
by default with Office, constantly working in the background to "speed up"
your processes.

Yep, I know, Chris, which is why I originally turned it off. That's also
when things went pear-shaped for GPL. As soon as I turned it back on for the
GPL folders, I was back in business. I can reproduce/fix the problem ad
nauseam simply by flipping indexing off/on.

Strange stuff, but as long as GPL works again, I'm not complaining (too
much).
