More probs getting GPL to run again

by John Zumste » Mon, 15 Jul 2002 10:31:54

I recently fired up GPL for the first time in a while and bumped into some
problems. The first was solved (thanks, Eldred), but now, whenever I get to
any screen, parts of the screen flicker on and off (text, mostly) and when I
get to a track, the graphics are a total mess. Also, clicking on Options
puts me right back to the desktop.

I have installed the 1.2 patch, the D3D patch and the fast-CPU patch, and
updated the .ini files accordingly.

Any ideas? I can't understand why GPL worked for so long, and now won't
(since the last time, I've installed and run F1-2001 and the various mods
for that sim.

setup:
P3 - 1ghz
GeForce 2 with latest drivers from nVidia (but get the same result with
older drivers)
384 mb RAM
Win2K
MS Forcefeed back wheel (gameport)

Try disabling all the 'features' in your D3D display settings then adding
them back one at a time. GPL is a fairly old game in 3d graphics terms & may
correctly not support something you've set. Have you tried software mode? If
this works it would suggest the problem is with your display settings.
Remember some add-ons don't work in software mode, though.

IIRC trilinear filtering on my old V3 3k caused a similar problem, although
that would have been in 3dfx.

hth, Malc.

Thanks, Marc, I'll give this a try.

Hmmm... Maybe you *don't* need the fast-CPU patch? I'm not sure, but I think
it was for speeds from 1.2MHz and higher...

oops... of course I meant "GHz" not "MHz" (even my Atari 800XL runs at more than
1.2MHz!) I checked, and the patch is for CPUs running at speeds hisgher than
1.4GHz, actually.

The fast-CPU patch didn't make any difference -- I'm now using a
non-fast-CPU-patched GPL 1.2 and getting these problems. Maybe this is the
excuse I need to go buy a new machine with a nice GeForce 4 T4600, eh?

Try playing with your external video card settings. I know things like FSAA
play hAvoc with GPL.
