CPR.N2.. frame rate stuff

by CART Te » Sat, 15 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Thanks for the posting - it almost seems as though people feel it necessary
to post an apology before saying anything nice about CPR on r.a.s.!

It's OK to like the sim - many other people do judging by our sales and
email!

Don't be intimidated by the slammers - I understand this is the traditional
r.a.s. "trial-by-fire"!

Maybe we should start a "CPR-Anon" group!  LOL!

Anyway, being serious for a sec, frame rate is *not* an issue with most
systems that
are properly configured and not set for MAX everything (sometimes I wish
we'd
just limited what MAX actually does - less visibility than 31, less trees,
less hills,
lower rez textures etc etc). Then everyone could say "I have it set to MAX
everything and it still runs fast!".

Oh well.

Anyway, 25-30 fps on your system is about right (but 10 other apps
running?).

I see 30-40fps on a similar setup (P6-200) with 64megs RAM and with detail
turned to
medium and GOOD image quality. And only CART running!

A PII-266 3dfx hits almost 50 fps consistently.

CPR.N2.. frame rate stuff

by David Radeck » Sun, 16 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Yeah it amazes me that so many people are slamming CPR and singing the
praises of N2, GP2, and ICR2 when some of the same people were slamming
these same products.  Don't get me wrong I think these are great products, I
just find it ironic.

Run in 640x480 mode but turn off everything except dashboard. Make sure =
you are not running Picture in Picture. Turning off the map and =
leaderboard helps but only about 1FPS for each option. If you can do =
without the dashboard you can turn that off also. Make sure you are =
running in full screen mode without a title bar. If you run in windowed =
or full screen with title bar you are running in software acceleration =

Run in 640x480 mode but turn off everything except dashboard. Make sure =

The magic ingredient missing is the Monster3D. Get one, if you're serious
into ***. At less than $150 retail, it should top everything else on your
Christmas gift list. My 200 MHz MMX with M3D cranks around 32 fps without
off-track objects. My old P5-90 with Hercules Voodoo Rush is "hobbling"
along at 22 fps.

As most people on this NG know, we have continually been asking for
constructive criticism
and have received a lot - the upcoming patch will reflect much of it.

But you do not have to look very far to see the "XYZ SUCKS!" brigade out in
force in r.a.s.

These, I understand, were the "NASCAR2 SUCKS!" brigade last year.

And "GP2 SUCKS!" before that.

I am sure you get my drift.

We are committed to making cpr a great sim.

I hope you'll agree our actions, so far, are consistent with that (we're
still here on ras!).

The patch will be released soon.

We will also have free CPR editors soon.

Make us feel like the work we are doing is appreciated.

Please, ras, work with us, not against us.

Someone asked why the "other" publishers do not frequent these forums as
often
as they would like and listen to the issues.

I wonder why?

Thanks Don.

While actions DO speak louder than words, our words (and time) are the most
helpful thing
we can provide right now, with our actions (editors and patch) following up
quickly behind.

I run Microsoft's sim businesses and I intend CPR to quickly become the most
customer-focused
racing sim available.

And r.a.s. feedback is integral to making this happen.

We are making a good start in the racing category and we (MS and TRI) will
push the quality bar
as far and as fast as we can.

p.s. MTM fans are not getting neglected either. News on this series soon!

CPR.N2.. frame rate stuff

by Andre Min » Mon, 17 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hi Dean...

Been watching most all the posts on RAS about CPR.  Can't speak for all,
but as for my part, I take the "extreme" (+ or - ) posts with a
considerable dose of salt. In the final analasys, I will be the one to
make up my own mind about the sim after it's full release, and  after I
OWN a copy myself.  I will then try it, tweak it, and make a
determination. If it's good... it's a keeper, and I'll race it. If
not... to the shelf it goes, and hey... it's not the end of the world!
(Where it would join some of my other self-decided "duds" that I've
bought over the years.)

Anyway, framerate question: I've seen several making mention of their
systems and the framerates they get. So, to sort of get an idea before
purchase (and I will purchase it), here's my basics... what do you think
I can expect in the way of performance with a fair amount of "eye
candy"? (I'm spoiled.)

P233MMX; 32 Meg 10n SDRAM; S3 vid chip w/4meg, SB awe64; T2 control.

Not meant to be a slam, only a point of reference, but I can run any
graphic + full field on any of Papy's, and all features on GP2 (except
good 'ol Monaco, there I drop the graphic levels one notch.). Smoooth on
the above... so with CPR... whad'ya think?  Huh? Huh?...

I think 50 fps was a bit of a stretch don't you think? I have a Dell PII
266 mhz w/ 4 mb Millenium and the only time I can get 50 fps consistantly
is with resolution at 320x200 and everything off. Without computer cars it
does go beyond 50 fps though...but again, only with the lowest resolution.
I've never been beyond 30 fps with resolution set to 640x480. Hope this helps.

Where is the 3dfx card? That was included in the systems I described.

PII 266 with 3dfx = 45-55 fps
