nForce 2 Sound vs Audigy

Lots of people have been asking about on board sound

Lots of nice comments on the side of nForce 2's onboard sound here

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Hope it helps some people realise that onboard sound doesnt mean it's
totally arse. It is in MOST cases - but in the nForce 2 case -it's more kick
arse

this is my MAIN reason for going AMD for my next system (due <1month :)).  the
nForce2 soundstorm has dolby digital ENCODING.  will kick ass connected to my
DD reciever.  there are no mobo's that have DD encoding for intel :(

Throw in the fact that they have said that upgrading will be
(generally) painless with the main differencess needed being that for
those going 64bit (new boards)
AMD also announced that they are now going to be 200fsb officialy,
Also a review of the latest MSI board at www.hardocp.com shows a new
NForce driver that cuts cpu overhead even more (no word on when it
goes "public")

correct me if i'm wrong, but if you have a DD reciever, with I presume a
digitalI/O why would you need DDencoding on the mobo?
I ask because I'm building a HT pc soon, and was going to get an M-audio
soundcard  because their spdif is said to be very stable.

its because i've got a DD receiver that i want a soundcard with dolby
encoding.  does that make sense? :)

games are not encoded with DD5.1, they're Direct Sound, A3D, EAX or whatever
is the flavour of the month.  the nForce soundforce will encode these games
into DD5.1 and send the information for my receiver.  other soundcards with
digital out will only be sending 2channel audio, so the best it can do is
dolby surround sound.  unless its a DVD, then it will output DD5.1, but its
pre-recorded audio, not real-time like in games.

I can only get GPL out of two speakers with my Nforce2. Anyone else have
better success? It is configured correctly because i get sound out of all 4
of my speakers in every other program.

i'll let you know when i get the computer (hopefully) next week :)

have you enabled 'create center channel', 'rear speaker phase', etc in nForce
conrol panel?  i think you need them enabled if the source is only 2 channels
(e.g. mp3's and some games).

nForce 2 Sound vs Audigy

Same with me. Everything else uses my 5.1 speakers except GPL.  I just
removed my Audigy to try out the nForce2 sound.  With the Audigy I got sound
in GPL through all speakers, but that may have been because the 5700
receiver was then set to emulate 5.1. I now have the nForce2 sound set to
decode to 5.1 so now if there is only a stereo signal, I guess it will only
go through the 2 speakers.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to keep the Audigy out permanently yet.
Certainly the nForce gets rid of the crackling and distorting problems I had
in some games, e.g. NR2002, but I don't feel that the nForce has the same
depth or quality sound as the Audigy.
