USB Modem recommendations for GPL please

by Rob » Fri, 16 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I've been playing GPL online using a 56K winmodem (I know, but it's what I
have!), and having lotsa fun but also lotsa warping. The worst was when I
was leading a race at Monza then warped at the line and was suddenly 3rd,
1:28 down.

Anyway, I read Allison's page about USB modems and am looking for
recommendations from people who have used one in GPL. For various reasons
cable and ADSL are not an option.

I live in Canada, so Canadian prices would be a bonus.

Thanks.

Rob, I've been using a Best Data USB modem for about a year now. I've only
had a handful of discos from VROC since I began using this modem. I can't
host any more racers than I did before, but the connection is much more
stable and it's one less device inside my machine generating heat.

Last night I had my first online race (don't ask!), so the question of
modems has been concerning me too. I use a USB for surfing, but found the
pings to local VROC servers quite poor. I tried a 56K (V90) at the default
setting and it improved the ping times by 50%. Now I don't know if this is
because my USB is a "no-name" brand or whether there is a problem with USB
in particular, but ask around some more before you commit. A friend of mine
who races online a lot says he has heared some horror stories about USB.
Will try "tuning" the 56K tonoght and see what happens.
p.s I'm in Oz.
                    Cheers..

Before I got cable my Creative USB Modem Blaster worked like a champ for me.

Read my article regarding my modem experience at Alsion's site. A USB modem
did not work for me. IMO your best with an internal hardware based modem. I
originally had a winmodem and it was brutal for ***. Good luck...
