I have to buy a modem to replace my 3com Winmodem which came with my system,
when I install the Thriller it creates a conflict with the modem that
Hercules says can't be fixed, without replacing the modem, or choosing a
different video card. I want the Thriller, because it makes the games I
play - GPL and N2 - look and play great. So if there are any Thriller users
out there that are having good luck with a particular modem, I'd love to

Seem to remember Alison Hines had a comment about installing a new modem &
it working very well with GPL for online racing so check her site out.

You won't be sorry to see the back of a Winmodem in any case!

I scrapped my Thriller 8mb PCI.... sitting in its static bag as I type.  The
conflict with the modem was KILLING me.  I did everything to help it.

Well, I have been a Rendition Faithful since I bought my Intergraph Reactor.
Well, I reinstalled my Millenium II 8mb AGP 2D card and then a CL VooDoo2 12mb
with it.  I have never looked back.  The 3dfx version of N99 and GPL runs
great, not to mention NFS3.

The 2d of the Matrox card BLOWS away the Thriller's 2d and the 3dfx Voodoo is
matching and in some cases out performing the Thriller in 3d.... on "my"
machine.

I'm not trying to play 3dfx vs Rendition but I have not had one conflict with
my modem and my monitor looks SOOOOOO much crisper at 1600x1200 in 2d and 3d
looks sweet.

The VROC site has a link to Alison Hine's discussion about USB modems, and why
your serial based modem may be killing GPL. It is very good reading

 Alison Hine's USB stuff

Also, I'd guess that you wouldn't have the IRQ conflict if you
bought an external modem (but I'm sure folks will gently correct me if
I'm wrong :).  I've got an external Zoom 56K (model 2849, was K56Flex,
flashed to v.90) that works fine with my Thriller/8/AGP.

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
