MY review of the CPR patch...

by M. Lockwo » Thu, 08 Jan 1998 04:00:00

My systems that I've tested on:

A = P200, 48MB RAM, STB Velocity 128, T2 wheel.

B = P166, 32MB RAM, Stealth Video 2001 (2MB DRAM) + Monster3D, CH Flightstick

Issues:

FRAME RATE

System A went from about 12fps on an empty track to around 24fps.  Awesome
improvement, playability wise.  This is with all eye candy on.  System B went
from 12fps to about 20 or 21fps with all eye candy on.  Over 25fps toned down.
Overall good job MS -- we'd all like to see 30fps, but this will hold us for
a while.

YELLOW FLAGS:

None.  Morons.

BRIGHTNESS:

Completely fixed on both systems.  You can make it so bright you'd think
you were racing on Mercury on a clear day.

AI:

Better.  You still can't control their speed well as you can with Papy games,
but they don't wreck you, they don't wreck themselves, they get the heck out
of the way if you're faster (and you will be).  Needs work still, especially
on the competition front.

STEERING JITTERS:

The "null zone" slider worked very well on both the wheel and joystick.  No
more jerking the nose of the car around all the way down the frontstretch at
Long Beach trying to get centered.  Fixed.

STEERING LOCK:

I'm indifferent on this one.  Doesn't seem to have changed much.  I didn't
really want it to change much.

Any questions?

Is that a final patch for CPR?  Or a beta version for the public?

It's a public release of the beta version.  The first 500 people to download
it from the Apex get it, after that, everyone has to wait for the final
release.  Head over to http://cart.gamestats.com to try and get a copy of
the patch.

It's an almost final beta. You better get it now because it will be gone
soon.

You can download now.  As an agreement, you have to submit a feed back to
the site author about the difference between the patch and the retail
version of CART.  Go here  http://cart.gamestats.com/

Crap! The official release will probably be tommorow or the day after
according to the Apex.

Well, I have one.  Were you able to go around the hairpins with the
old steering lock?  I was unable to drive Vancouver and Long Beach,
but it seems to be fixed now.  Now if I could have that steering lock
without the touchiness on the straights. Is that what Non-Linear and
Speed Sensitive steering are about?  If so, which direction on the
sliders have what effect.

Dan.

Moving to the right decreases sensitivity. Linear in general and
speed when at higher speeds.
