Track substitutes in N2...

by Lasse » Wed, 16 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hi !

I guess we're all waiting for some Track Pack to be released for Nascar
Racing 2, but
in the meantime something can be done about those missing tracks.

At http://www.racesimcentral.net/
Daytona and Texas. They're simply copies of Talladega and C***te with
name
references etc changed. Race lenghts are modified to actual race lengths
along with
a modified calendar file.

The California track can be produced in the same manner by copying Michigan
(the banking differs somewhat), renaming it and changing the number of laps
to 250 instead of 200 (it's a 500 mile race).

Things that remain unmodified are track graphics, lap speeds, pit windows
etc, but
many of these things can be changed by editing the track text file for each
track.

If anyone has some detailed info about the contents of the track text
files, please
post it here...

Well, we pretty much can convert the old track to a new name for a
temporary replacement. The problem is that that isn't to fun, it's the same
track because everytrack has a different charteristic. SO I suggest that we
better group together to make the track altogether correctly.

Track substitutes in N2...

Does any one have a hex code editor?  I'm going to try and edit the drivers
list so you can have 43 cars at tracks like dega.  And tracks also like the
banking at char so it was more like texas.  I havn't heard much on
california, (we'll find out when rusty gets there, he'll love it in
practice but if he wrecks he'll say it needs reconstrusted also).
I've talked to a programer and they told me that I would need the hex code
editor and then need to understand machine code.
Is there anyone who knows machine code?
Any info on a hex edit would be greatly appreceated.

Rob

For a hex editor try UltraEdit32.  I don't have the URL handy, but you
should be able to get it from just about any Win95 shareware site.

I can appreciate your desire to do it, but changing the tracks using a hex
editor is for all practical purposes
impossible !!   I have written programs that will extract the TRK and 3DO
files into its various records.   Even
with this, making changes is not realistic.  To change the banking, for
example, you would have to make
exacting changes to both the 3DO and TRK file, making the virtual driving
surface banking change as well
as the visible driving surface (these are two seperate things).  I have
made changes to the TRK file that make
the cars drive under the track etc.while experimenting with the records in
the TRK file.  To do this right, you
would need code that could make the modifications to both files correctly -
and even this is very difficult to do,
since there is a lot of reverse engineering to do in order to get this
right.  I would like nothing more that to
produce tools to edit and/or produce tracks for N2.  However, even Papyrus
(who knows all the formats)
spend a lot of time developing tracks.  It is difficult to justify this
kind of effort.

There has been alot of testing at California. Bobby Hamilton turned a
lap at around 203 mph. The IROC testers say that you can run 4 or 5 wide
in alot of places. By the way I don't think Rusty would say to much
about the track considering its owned by his car owner.
