Maybe most of you know about this but I wish I would have known about it
earlier.

Fantastic sound and video originally recorded in IMAX format.

Saw the IMAX movie 4 times while on vacation,  almost caused a
divorce.

The Superspeedway DVD was the first DVD on my shelf.

It rocks.  The sound is phenomenal, and always a show off for the friends.
The making of is awesome too, seeing how they strapped that huge IMAX camera
on a CART car - and how Mario could drive the thing at speed with it on
there :-)

Yes, this DVD has an incredibly sharp picture and breathtaking sound. I played
it for my parents (definitely not racing fans) and they were mesmerized. Now
I've got my Dad off of his golf game and actually playing "Rally 2000" on the
playstation we bought him last Christmas. He sucks. We call him "Two-Wheel Bob"
cause he can't keep the damn car upright, but that's NOT the point. My devious
and brilliant plan to slowly subvert him to the dark side of GPL ***ion is
proceeding apace.  Showed him a videotape of GPL I'd made off my 'puter and he
said, "That one looks interesting."

BWAA HAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Surely madness that way lies......

Yeah JB, its considered a reference DVD because of the incredible
sound.  If you have a 5.1 home theater setup it doesnt get much
better.  Great "making of" documentary too.

Hey, thanks.  I *didn't* know that.  I was just in the IMAX theatre on the
weekend, and the opening trailer for IMAX films includes some footage from
that one, and that prompted me to think "damn, wish I'd seen that when it
was in the IMAX theatres".  Time to look for th DVD.

Okay, I'm always a bit of a contrarian...

I waited anxiously for the release in the local theater, and did truly enjoy
it (even with our planetarium-distorted view).  But I think the story line
parts are highly throw-away.  Would have far preferred doubling, or trebling,
the amount of on-track and in-car time and dumping campfires and restoration
scenes.

The sound from in-car seemed to me to be extremely synthesized/enhanced.  It
doesn't roar/whoosh like that as you pass overheads and other cars, does it? I
found that disappointing (then again, perchance it is real, I'd switch to
"it is amazing!").

Yes, I bought the DVD, one of my first.  You can get it through www.buy.com
(go to videos).  Also available at chains like Media Play.  In many ways, the
making of feature is superior to the feature itself.  Just about as long, and
concentrates on the technical aspects.  With many shots of the behemoth camera
on track.  So I *do* recommend the video to all racing fans.  Though it could
have been far better.

Also, I just picked up "in car 956" from a net-sale.  It's been talked about
here before.  Amazing footage of Derek Bell driving a works Porsche 956
at speed around some of our favorite tracks (the 'ring Nordshleife, Lemans,
Spa, Silverstone...).  To bad it isn't on or of DVD quality.  If so, it would
have rated higher than Speedway.

I completly agree with you.  The in-car footage is great, but as a film,
Super Speedway is pretty bad.  The other thing that drives me nuts is the
way footage from multiple tracks is edited to imply a single race.

My exact thoughts as well.  It does sound great, but it just has to be
fake or enhanced.

Don't know about where you all saw it, but I had an even cooler
experience- they had the actual car they restored in the film
on display at the exit to the theatre! A total surprise. After seeing it
in the film I just stood there and stared. A truly awesome experience.
However, to answer the at-hand question: It should be available at
and good DVD dealer Suncoast, Saturday Matinee, etc.. Look
in the 'Special Interest' section of the store, keeping an eye for
other IMAX converted film...

I played it for my 5 year old son and he loved it.  He likes watching F1,
CART, and NASCAR races on TV with me and even knows a lot of the drivers
names by their cars, but he's been loosing interest in sims (he once managed
a 1:58 lap at Monza when he was 4!).  Ahh, he's spending too much time with
Magic School Bus and Blues Clues.

I don't know where you're ordering from, but most all on-line DVD stores (In
the US) carry it.  I picked it up from DVDexpress.com.  Best DVD I've bought
to date.  Great to show off your HT.

Drool...

Don't have a DVD player yet...one in the mail...

Get this...about two or three years ago, when it first came out, I was in
Fontana, CA for the CART race...so I went to Ontario Mills to see a preview
of the then-under-construction Arizona Mills...and went into the IMAX
theater to watch Super Speedway.  Got about 20 minutes into it...it
stopped...some fruity music playing in the background...then 10 minutes
later they come and tell us it's busted.  You know when I finally saw it in
its entirety?  When it finally came to the Arizona Science Center about the
middle of last year.
