Nascar 2002 & Radeon 8500-D3D or OpenGL?

I have been running Nascar 2002 in D3D because when you configure 3D
graphics, OpenGL says (unsupported). I have the following specs:

Radeon 8500LE-Catalyst 2.1
Windows 98SE
MSI K7T Turbo2
256MB PC133
AthlonXP 1600+

I upgraded to Catalyst 2.4 because it claimed a performance increase in
Nascar 2002 for all Radeon series video cards.

I uninstall the old ATI control panel >reboot
I uninstall the old ATI driver >reboot

I install the new ATI driver >reboot
I install the new ATI control panel >reboot

Catalyst 2.4 turned out to be slower (at least in D3D.....I never tried
OpenGL). I went back to Catalyst 2.1 and everything is back to normal.

Someone told me I should be running the game in OpenGL.

Is this true? Are the Catalyst 2.4's optimized for OpenGL in Nascar 2002?

Use OpenGL.  I run the 2.4 and have had no problems with them, best drivers
so far.
D3D takes a hit after cars become damaged, OpenGL doesn't seem to do this
and give me better frame rates overall.
PS - It was me that mentioned OpenGL on Rage3D :)

Open GL is fine with the 8500 and in fact far better graphics. Dont worry
about "supported"

Yup, OpenGL has been faster than D3D for me with GF2MX400 and Radeon

Mine installs a standard windows 8500 driver by itself. Installing the new
one over it works great though.

You can also go into your registry and remove all ATI Tech. keys just to
know they've all been removed.

I've never seen Win98se do that. Regardless, the readme files always tell
you to install the standard vga drivers for Win9x first.
