I'm running MGPRS2 on an Abit BM6, Celeron 450A, Voodoo3 3000, MX300,
under Win 95 OSR2.1. I'm using the 1.06 Glide patch.
Since I just upgraded my hardware I first used my old "dirty" install
of MGPRS2 without problems. It had been patched sequentially since
last September, so I figured it was time for a fresh install to clean
things up. I ran into some problems, but managed to work around all
of them. The installation didn't recognize the Voodoo3 as a
Glide-capable card, so I was forced to install the Direct3D version.
I went ahead and applied the Glide 1.06 patch and now run the
mgprs_v.exe executable without problems.
(The D3D version didn't let me change resolutions above 640x480, but
the Glide version runs very well at 1024x768, so that's not a
problem).
I had consistent crashes until I changed my sound settings. There
have been many reports of issues with Vortex2 cards, so I now disable
DirectSound Hardware acceleration in the Aureal control panel when I
run MGPRS2. I also went ahead and changed the sound setting in
snd_cpa.ini from Unconditionnal=None to Unconditionnal=WAVX2. Note I
run the latest (beta) Vortex2 drivers from Aureal, version 2030.
After installing the game service I had no problems running a bunch of
6-lap races online, though my local San Francisco server has nobody on
it--I had to use the Dusseldorf server!
Here's hoping UBISoft fix the Vortex2 sound problems!
