It doesn't seem to be... I've taken my car across the bridge before the last turn
at silverstone with traffic below & never been hit. 'Course I could've just gotten
lucky, but if you knew me, you would know I don't get lucky very often!

This is based on the observation of somebody, who drove onto the bridge of
Silverstone during a race. The AI cars running under the bridge tried to
dodge him. (I haven't tried this little experiment, but I think it is true).
*BUT*, running over an object in the same track section as the AI is a
different story than actually being in a totally different track section
than the AI (as you were at the crossing in Monza). I don't believe that the
AI could 'see' you there. So I'm very optimistic, that a 'banked Monza' *can
be done* in GPL.
BTW, I've just started writing an editor for *.trk files (which contain the
physical layout of a track) just out of interest. If somebody had the
knowledge of creating a track.3do file (which seems to be a *** thing) out
of a *.trk file, that would be a *big* step towards a working track editor.
Sadly, all track editor projects seem to be dead. I only know two sites,
which contain infos about track editing and both weren't updated for months:
Paul Hoad's Track Editor Project and Phil Flack's GPL File Formats.
Does anybody know more sites with good infos about that?

Peter (hoping a GPL track editor will become reality - sooner or later...)

Brands it was.
The movie starts at Monaco with the famous dive into the harbour.

Jim Gary is working on it at this point in time.

A dive into the harbour at Monca? That does sound spectacular. Can
anyone please describe a little bit what happened? Which driver was
it, which car, did he survive?

I don't know about the movie, but this has happened twice in real life.
In 1955 Alberto Ascari survived a "dunk" in his Lancia, only to die 4 days
later in a testing accident at Monza.
Ten years later Paul Hawkins repeated the feat in his Lotus. But it must
have been in practice because he finished 10th in the race.

Well, Frankenheimer had some cameras plus an aircraft or helicopter in
Spa, and that equipment would have caught some nice pictures over at
the Ring, too.

In the movie, it was James Garner's character, Pete Aron.  The entire Monaco
opening is absolutely spectacular, by the way.  Aron had a faulty
transmission that caused him to slow after the tunnel resulting in a
collision with his teammate, Scott Stoddard.  Aron winds up in the drink and
Stoddard climbs the hillside and flips, getting seriously injured.  The team
blames Aron and sacks him.  That's the reason for the animosity between Aron
and Stoddard throughout the film (not to mention the fact that Aron starts
sleeping with Stoddard's wife ;-) ).

And, no, you can't re-created this in GPL.  I had a similar accident once and
as I was hurtling towards the Mediterannean, I hit an invisible force-field
that kept me dry.  Bummer.

This race was was just shown on Speedvision's "Legends of Motorsport" a
couple of weeks ago (my cable TV supplier just added Speedvision in
September!).  They didn't get the actual off on film, but they did show the
aftermath a few seconds later.  Frogmen who were standing by, jumped in,
butAscari swam to a nearby yacht,

Speaking of the Ring, have any of you seen that new Saturn commercial
where they test drive a Saturn at the Ring?  There's not a ton of
footage, but they do show the car being driven through the Carousel (or
perhaps the Little Carousel).
