Villeneuve's remark on Video Game

by Zondagsrijde » Sun, 25 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I wasn't paying much attention when I heard Villeneuve commenting on his
pole position in the Belgium Grandprix on CNN International.
I believe he said something like:

"I checked out a new video game, and it matches the track pretty well."

Is it possible he meant Microprose's Grand Prix 2?
Or are there other Video Games around like this one?

From what I heard he said, he practiced on "the new Grand Prix game".

I would think it has to be GP2.

From the last few days of racing on it, and watching the qualifying today,
I have to congratulate Geoff and company for making the game track
very realistic compared to the real one.

From the incar footage and track footage it looks very accurate, and having
now raced there (simulated) I can finnally really appreciate seeing those
drivers take Eau Rouge at such high speeds.

I can only imagine how difficult this track must be in the wet.
Actually <G> for now I can only imagine, hopefully in the future we will
be able to also simulate these wet conditions.

Cheers.

That's nice. I missed some things, I guess. I was playing "Duke Nukem 3D"
and the TV was on CNNI, in the background.

Yes.
Although I think GP2 has some drawbacks as a GAME, as a SIMULATION it
opened a whole new world for me.

Precisely!
And not only Eau Rouge, it's the whole track. All tracks. Before GP2, I had
to rely on the TV-commentators for 'inside' information. Now, I can learn
every circuit by heart, and know the difference between slow corners and
fast corners. Because on TV, with tele-lenses it's hard to see how the
corners actually are.

I just wished that for every race there was a TV-footage available from an
inboard-camera covering a *complete* lap, without any interrupt, or
switching to another car.
Just to compare this to a complete lap with GP2.
Maybe there are AVI's (or alikes) available on some Internet site?

Actually, as a GP2 racer, I'm not that good. Keep it dry please!
But I love GP2 as a way to learn more about F1 racing.

Apologies if this upsets our US readers, but the BBC give you
a "lets go round the track with ..." commentary taken from
the practice sessions. Usually has Jonathan Palmer commentatin
on the speeds, braking points and gear changes.

Unfortunately, next year our coverage goes to commercial
channels, so we'll be faced with the "lets go to our sponsors"
ads just as an important overtaking spot is being approached
and invariably returns after all the action.

I'm going to miss uninterrupted grand prix coverage :-(

<...>

I think racing sims come the closest to "really being there" of any
action sport video game... and I think they have the potential of
expanding the popularity of real racing. You are absolutely right; you
can *really* know every track, inside and out, and it makes watching
the real race so much more interesting.

Me too- I love the in car shots. And I'm sure copies of the entire
race from in car cameras are kept by every team- they ought to sell
them!

I figure in the future, when we can choose whatever shot we want, then
racing will be the ultimate TV sport. For now, I wish coverage would
normally provide a small window with in-car shots always running.
Maybe go split screen, since the in-car shot doesn't need much above
the horizon. And while they're at it, put a little map up there with a
dot to show wherever on the track that car is.

There's a workaround: Get cable or sattelite (sp?) and try to zap
around the commercials. This makes watching Formula One an educational
event too: (Eurosport) "...15 laps to go with Damon Hill leading the
race - we will be back after these messages" [zap] (RTL) "...nachdem
Michael Schumacher mit Getriebeschaden ausgefallen ist, geben wir kurz
nach Koeln" [zap] (Antenne 2) "Jean Alesi a la troisieme place,
magnifique..." :)
Actually, RTL is quite useless, because they seem to have synchronized
their breaks with Eurosport. Whenever I switch to RTL from Eurosport,
they are showing commercials. I couldn't swear they're actually
showing the race at all.
