From what I have heard and read about it, I am almost certain that is
was
indeed GP2. He supposedly used it to learn both Hungaroring and Spa.
Jacq
is also well-known about his affection with computers, so I have no
doubt
that he has GP2. (He also told the press that he could qualify only in
the
9th row in Spa in the game. ;)

It must have been GP2, that is all I can figure. Ya, I got up at 3:40
A.M. to watch the race, but hearing small rumours to the effect that
JV was using GP2 was absolutely thrilling, really woke me up! I figure
in the interview he might have had to refrain from mentioning the
product... but he did refer to a "computer video game." What else
could it be that could be SO helpful?

If playing GP2 really had an effect on the outcome of the race, that
sounds like MAJOR product endor***t potential. MAJOR. I remember
hearing that one of the rookie late-season new drivers in CART also
mentioned using the computer (ICR2), but hey, JV using GP2 is very
big.

Yes, it was definitely GP2.  One of the Sunday newspapers quoted
Villeneuve as saying he'd been playing it - but that he only
managed to get 18th on the grid in the game...

Didn't Zanardi miss a press interview or something because he was having to
much fun playing ICR2 before the US 500 this year? Also, Bobby Labonte
talked about playing NASCAR as preparation for the 1st race at Bristol this
year.

I think everyone's blowing this out of proportion. All I remember is
hearing JV in an interview saying it helped him learn what was coming
next (corner-wise), and helped him to approximate his breaking points.

From my point of view this means he doesnt have to spend so much
of Friday practise learning the track but can spend more time on
setting the car up.
This combined with the fact that the team are allowing him to go
completely his own way with the set-up (which is what I attribute
the most to his improved performance) is what's making him faster.

I'm not saying GP2 is rubbish or *not* helpful in aiding the driver,
I'm just trying to put it into perspective.

That is odd, because aiui GP2 is based on the 1994 season, when Spa had
that piss-silly chicane at Eau-Rouge.

Surely GP1 would have been more helpful, since it uses a track layout
almost identical to today's?

Actually although GP2 is based on the 1994 season, due to popular demand
they kept the traditional Spa track with Eau Rouge and Raidillon, instead of
the terrible safer version of the track.

Great track to race on by the way (simulated race that is).

Cheers.

<snipped>

Fair enough. But I thought the reason JV brought up "playing a
computer video game" to begin with was in response to interviewer's
surprise at being able to take pole at Spa and win Hungary, having
never raced them before. That is what made it notable from my
perspective.

Motoring News quoted JV as saying that the circuits *and* car were very
convincing.

Although GP2 is based on the 94 season, I can confirm happily that there
is no "piss-silly" chicane at Eau-Rouge. It can be taken flat out in top
gear ! Well alright......I have to ease off slightly.

Regards to all,
