Unless an actual release date was advised, it is impossible for it to be
"overdue".

They did say early 98. How many months do you consider early?
Past the end of March and they are dog foood.

I'd think anything from January 1 to June 30 could be called early 98,
and July 1 to December 31 late 98, but I doubt if many would agree with
that.

They chose to leave the intrepretation of the release date up to the
reader. So it's not impossible, it is a fact that it's overdue as far
as I'm concerned. If they don't like that they can provide a real
"exact date".

>They promised to deliver an exact date in their press release, then
>wussed out with "early 98". Here's the letter:

You say "wussed out", I say "made a very sensible business decision,
knowing the kind of uncompromising attitude which prevails around
here". We've done this to death before, enough already! :-)

Cheers!
John

PS - Anyway, if semantics are the game I should point out that Erica's
message mentioned she would announce the exact date the patch "is
due", not "will be released". ;-)

That's a funny way of describing a clearly broken promise (i.e., the
promise to provide an "exact date"). Ever considered a career as a
spin-doctor?

Heck we can toss around the semantics of it all day, but I see no
reason for it. It will be released when it is finished and
appropriate, and no beating each other over the head with dictionaries
or grammatical fancy footwork will accomplish anything toward that.

I've got one already (seriously), but thanks for the offer :-)

Cheers!

Keep in mind that the 'exact date' promise was given by someone who, as
it turns out, had no authority to make such a statement.

I remember a time when folks complained about failure to relase software
on time. Complaining about a companies failure to release a release date
is a bit much...

By the way, anyone remember the release date for that release date?
Maybe Papyrus doesn't want to release the release date until its
ready... I'd rather wait a bit longer to get an accurate release date
than have them release the release date early and then have to release a
revised release date later...

Not to mention that what was posted to this group (with the "exact
date" clause) was a private e-mail from a Papyrus employee, not a
sanctioned release from Papyrus.

As always, posting private e-mail publicly is an exercise in bad
taste, but because it's so easy to do, and apparently so hard for
people to resist the temptation to get their name on a "scoop" it
still happens...

As long as we are reminiscing, I remember a time when there was no such
thing as a patch to begin with, it wasn't even that long ago.  What you got
was what you were stuck with, like it or not.  Games were usually working
correctly the first time out.
