Is anyone else driving with a joystick?

I have a nice MS Sidewinder FF Pro I use to race (Nascar Legends)..
just curious how many other joystick drivers there are out there.

Sure, an ideal world involves getting a wheel, but I fly flight simes
(Warbirds) more than I drive so a stick makes more sense. Any benefit
to driving with the keyboard over the joystick?

Just curious.

Some of the fastest guys in the world use joysticks.

it is my opinion that joystick racing is easier than with a wheel. I have used
both for extended periods of time, and the joystick requires less dexterity,
and less accuracy. The wheel- requires 4 coordinated limbs to use, the
joystick- only 2. less motion is required from the stick to manipulate input
values.
A wheel is more fun, but I'm allways faster with my MS SW PP.

Thats because with the right joystick its easier to turn fast laps.

Nope, no benifit to using a keyboard over a Joystick/wheel, unless your
racing arcade games, then I prefer the keyboard or a gamepad.
There are, of course, people out there that are very fast using the
keyboard.

Health could be one reason.
I used a joystick
I would drive just before going to bed
and I had this mild problem in my little finger
I did not put the problem and the joystick together at first.
After I did a full length race at Monaco(one and only full distancer)
the old finger was very bad
and it has not been the same since
though it has gotten better than it was
It is kind of like 'carrpel tunnel'
the finger does not move when you try to move it
then it just snaps into place,
if I make a***then try to open my fingers all the fingers except my
little one move normal
but it just shoots out after a second or so.
It is no big deal and I have not even bothered seeing a doctor
but it was enough to stop me using the jostick
but after failing terribly with the keyboard I have
gone with a wheel this christmas

Just ask Woelfgang Woeger! He's the one of worlds fastest GPL'ers using a
stick. (Maybe he isn't a good reference as he isn't from this planet... - or
is he?)
I think you can be faster but it is a lot harder to be consistent because a
joystick is very exhausting on the wrists after a while.
I've tried it a while ago when my T2 broke down.
It works, but I prefer a wheel. Sure you can react faster with a joystick
but I don't think you be as precise as with a wheel.

Know what you mean about chopping and changing.  I struggled with a
wheel until it broke and the damned thing required my com2 port so if I
wanted to go online I had to swap it over with my modem.  Also with so
little room I couldn't get the whole thing comfortably setup.

I've been using a joystick for sims now for about 6 months - due to
those limitations of space - and have no problems being competitive.  I
have the joystick stuck to a piece of plate glass that I have on my lap.
I mainly play GPL, but just got N3 as a chrissy pressy so have been
playing that a bit in the last few days, though I have a long way to go
with it before I start getting serious.

With GPL I can race and win online and can beat the AI at Grand Prix
level when I keep it on the track for the full race, though this can be
*** for me poor old knees.

As long as the joystick is giving you smooth feedback then you should be
fine.

Rik,
I also have a MS SW PP and  was hoping that you could tell me how you
have yours set up?  I would like to shift up and down using the base
buttons A and B is this possible? I have not been able to do this.
My assignments are:
Acceleration=Stick Forward
Reverse=Stick Backwords
Brakes=Button #1
Shift Up=Button #4
Shift Down=Button #3
Turn Left=Stick Left
Turn Right=Stick Right
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Weird...  Why do you brake with a button instead of using an axis? What game
is it for Gpl? I'm sure you will get better results switching your reverse
with your brake.

i use the slider forward to acelerate, and the stick back to brake, fire1&2 for
shifting,
stick L&R for turning.
