Which make of 12Mb Voodoo 2?

by Rick Gowe » Wed, 28 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I have decided that a 12 MbVoodoo2 is best choice for me (PII 233, 64
Mb) -I want to play CMR, F1RS, GPL, TOCA, TOCA2 and any future games
that my system can still handle! I admit I am already out of my depth,
but are all makes of card the same - they all use the same chip, but
reading posts some have better driver support than others. Can someone
recommend a card manufacturer please. The money is burning a hole in my
pocket, so if you can also give me a supplier and price in the UK, i
will order today! Please dont suggest an alternative type of card unless
it will work with all the above and cost around 90 and give the same or
better performance (its taken me ages to decide on the V2 :-).
TIA, and apologies for slight off-topicness!

Anything but the STB Blackmagic. I got three of them and no driver updates
for months. Pathetic really when 3dfx own STB!

A recent acquisition... I have owned a number of STB cards and liked every
single one of them. That said, I got every single one of them direct from
STB for press preview ;)

Aside from the Canopus Pure 3D 2, all Voodoo2's are basically the same
card as they conform to the "reference" design from 3dfx.  The only
difference between the cards is the drivers.  I can tell you from
experience that the driver support from Canopus is very poor, they
rarely release new drivers.  Diamond and Creative have good drivers
and have released updated drivers whenever 3dfx released a new
reference driver.  The Metabyte Wicked3D probably offers the best
drivers of all Voodoo2 cards and are very good with updates.  One
thing I like about the Wicked3D is that you can SLI it with any
Voodoo2 card on the market, and you can also run a single card at
resolutions up to 1024x672.  Their SLI support also offers higher
resolution than any other cards, running up to 1024x1024.  I foolishly
purchased a Pure3D2 based on their Voodoo1 product and have really
regretted it due to their lack of driver updates.

3dfx has bought STB--and are now selling V2 12 meg cards as the V2
1000--for around $99 US here in Texas at Best Buy.

Be nice if they produced new drivers for the already exisiting STB 12MB
Voodoo2 Blackmagic. So far their support has been pathetic.

My guess is that STB/3dfx has put the vast majority of their resources in the
Voodoo3 project.  I personally own a Diamond Monster 2 and am pretty happy
with it, but I hope to upgrade to a Voodoo3 3000 in the very near future.

I dl'd the drivers for my Black Magic when I got it.  Haven't had a
need for newer drivers yet.....YET.   Other than that it works great.

It's not compatability you need newer drivers for, although the orginal one
only supported Direct X 5 extensions, but PERFORMANCE. THe 3dfx reference
drivers are far better then the STB originals. Diamond etc have produce even
better drivers based on the reference drivers. Thhi si what you expect. STB
haven;t done this and it's simply not good enough.
