TOCA any good?

If you are referring to Sega's Touring Car Championship. Don't bother
wasting the time to pick it up.
I got it a little over a year ago for $30 with a $20 rebate. I never got the
rebate despite several unanswered emails to Sega.
At one time it was voted the worst driving game here on r.a.s. The handling
it terrible, steering erratic and you could stop a car on a banked curve and
actually watch it slide to the lower side of the track.
A total waste of time and gas even if the game is free.

TOCA any good?

It's not a bad sim.  It's far from GPL or even Sports Car GT but good
fun nevertheless.

I'd become ***ed to the BTCC programming on Speedvision and picked
up the game (my first racing game) at full price.  I think I got good
value for that money.  I had always avoided racing sims thinking that
they would never match the real thing (like I would know...) but I
found TOCA to be great fun.

Unfortunately it doesn't take long to master the game (AI is a bit
weak) and I found myself skipping qualifying so I could start from the
back of the grid in order to have some sort of challenge.

I don't know about TOCA, but TOCA2 is already in the cheapie section
at Electronics Boutique in the US.
I had a lot of fun with it. I only paid $29 US for it when it came
out, and I think its going for about 15 now. Well worth it.

Is the original TOCA any good? They have it now at www.compusmart.com with a
rebate for the full price. Basically it will only cost the amount of the tax
(a couple dollars). Is it still any good, or is there just no point in
ordering it? Anyone know if TOCA 2 will be rereleased cheaply anytime soon?
Thanks.

It is what it is, Marc, an original of the series. Toca 2 is much better,
but the sequels in *** (unlike in the movies) often are. If you've never
played TOCA, it's leaning more towards arcade than sim, especially Toca1,
(limited amout of setup options), but for the price that you've been quoted,
it's got to be worth a go? If you hate it, you've just got a new coaster.
Toca 2, apparently, is hard to find in the States, but you have to think
that that's going to change with the impending release of Toca3, featuring
world-wide tracks, as opposed to just our British ones. Me, I like Toca,
always have (apart from the bad programming, inasmush as turning the
graphics all the way down makes the car go appreciably faster) but, to be
fair, I haven't run Toca 1 for a very long time.
A bit ambiguous, but there you are - hope this helps.

I didn't mean Sega touring car, no. I downloaded the demo of that and
deleted it after less than a lap. If it was $20 with a $40 or $50 rebate, I
might consider it. Otherwise, foget it. Thanks anyway.

<snip>

He's not. Marc is referring to the Codemasters game "TOCA Touring Car
Championship", which was released (in the UK, anyway) in 1997 and
simulates the British Touring Car Championship. Although it's
rather arcadey, and the graphics are old-fashioned these days (pop-
up!!!), it's good fun, and better than Sega TCC by a factor too high to
compute.

There are AI tweakers, you know, Sideshow.....I don't think they work on
Toca 1, but you can certainly turn 'em up to unfeasibly high levels in Toca
2.

Martyn,
Its definitely a good game and really good fun.  Be sure to get
the patch though for a few fixes and better network play

Oh ya. I wasn't thinking. In my haste to warn you before you stepped out to
buy it, I didn't take the time to think it through. Oh well, hey, my heart
was in the right place. My brain just wasn't functioning.
I never tried TOCA, but did try the demo of TOCA2 and as I recall it wasn't
too bad.

Ummm... Nevermind ;)

Plus its got Formula Fords, Lister Storms, Jaguar XJS's, and other cars.
Great Game TOCA 2 - good balance between sim and arcade. A quick 10 lapper
then back to work - brilliant! Buy it. Original TOCA was great fun too.

TOCA any good?

by Ken Bear » Sun, 23 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I got it for $29 too, and although I tired of it after a while had quite a
bit of fun with it.  For $15 it'd be well worthwhile to at least check out.

It's under a different name in the US though, which at this moment escapes
me.  "Touring Car Challenge" or something similar, not TOCA 2.
