Sigh... c'mon Sierra enough is enough.  Threat us like shite, we'll just do
the same in return.  It's *not* the way to please the public.  There is
NOTHING new in the press release below.  There is NOTHING that couldn't
already be in NR2002 or patched in.  It's pure milking.

Oh and Papyrus, please change your name to "Papyrus Stockcar Racing Games".
You are nothing more, it's a shame to the whole simracing community to have
you forced to only do that.  Your logo is not worth what you people have
done for half a decade now.

---------------------------------------------------------
NASCAR Racing 2003 Season

Strap yourself into the driver's seat of a 750-horsepower NASCAR stock car
and battle Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Tony Stuart on all 23
Winston Cup tracks. Choose your paint scheme or get under the hood with
your pit crew and tune your car to win. Let NASCAR legend Darrel Waltrip
give you the inside scoop on each track or just jump in and race your
favorite drivers. Now even rookies can drive like the pros using the
all-new Driving Assist feature. Immerse yourself in a dynamic race
environment where you'll see a blur of flashes through the dirt buildup on
your windshield as spectators snap photos from the grandstands. Hear the
engines thunder and the tires squeal as you drop the hammer in the
backstretch at 191mph and pull ahead for the win. Then create your race
winning highlight reel with the easy-to-use Replay Editor feature and savor
your win. The 2003 season has begun.

NEW! Save Game will allow you to take a breather during those
grueling 500-mile marathons.
      NEW! 2003 Teams and Sponsors.
NEW! Race all 23 Tracks, including the Coca Cola Super-Speedway
Fantasy Track, at speeds of more than 220 mph
NEW! Dynamic environments bring the tracks to life. Dirt will build
up on your windshield. Debris will kick up as you fly by. Crowds will come
to life when you go three a*** in turn four.
NEW! Automatic Artificial Intelligence will set the competitors
strength to match your skills.
Track Tours Narrated by three-time NASCAR Champion Darrel Waltrip.
Racing Lessons allow you to master the art of NASCAR
Race up to 43 of your friends online.
Incredible 3D Physics deliver one of the most realistic NASCAR
racing experiences

Yearly updates like this are becoming the norm now in *** and in most
software.  I would just as soon pay $50 to get small improvements than wait
years for them.  $50 a year is cheap for the entertainment we get out of
this sim, that's not even 6 trips to the theatre.  Everyone was down on
Sierra when N2002 was announced and people said it was nothing more than a
patch, since then however everyone seems to be loving it.  I'm not trying to
defend Sierra for trying to make money off us every year but for me it is
with the price as long as they keep improving it with each release.

There ARE several standout features of that list..
plus the return of a couple of oldies...
The learning AI is straight from GPL and the race save comes back after a
three year hiatus.  But the dynamic enviroment sounds intriguing...I wonder
how they will model the shape & sound of a bugsplat at 190mph?
Notice they didn't mention new improved online abilities?  (pssst that's
because they've got the best system already)
The one "NEW" that seems odd is the "NEW!" 23 tracks including Coca
Cola...don't we already HAVE the tracks with N2002?
What you still aren't seeing is the 125 milers at Daytona, the Mid Season
All-Star C***te Race(mind blank can't remember it's name at the momemnt)
And we still can't drive from the garage area out to the track and STILL
after years and years we can't sit in tech inspection line for hours on
end...c'mon...WHEN are they gonna deliver?

I agree $50 a year is peanuts in return for a very good game, but it hasn't
been a year since N2002, nor was it a year between N4 and N2002. I thought
EA was bad releasing an F1 game every 6 months, but Papy is going a bit too
far with their frequent releases.

Also I agree 100% with ymenard, Papy really should think about renaming
themselves to "Papyrus Stockcar Racing".

Several?  I see nothing new.  Save Game was already in earlier versions,
it's nothing new, or fantastic.  We're talking about games here, save games
are normal features.  What's left?  Learning AI?  You mean the *same*
learning AI that created much problems in GPL.  Remember the fights from the
simracers to have an AI slider?.  That Dynamic environment is the only thing
left that is barely new.  It's the only thing.  50$ for that?  No thanks.

There is many, many things in the Multiplayer Community Options that are
lacking.  It might be the best, but it's a mess of GUI :(

Look at EA Sports, new Hockey, Football, etc game every year and most of the
changes are just teams and rosters.
Again no one is making us buy these updates. If you like the current one
then keep it, if not then feel free to upgrade.

Where did you happen to find this press release?

I think Papy makes NASCAR because that is what the mass want.  They are not
going to develop a game that doesn't sell.
Personally I have no desire to play GPL at all but that is because I don't
enjoy that style of racing, and has nothing to do with the quality of the
game.  Right now NASCAR is number 1 and thus their focus.  I wouldn't mind
seeing Papy do a current F1 game but again it comes down to sales.

Who told you NASCAR is number 1? I don't want to get into a debate as to
which sport or series is no.1, but from what I hear F1 is the second most
popular sport in the world. Anyway, all I was trying to say was that they
clearly have a talented bunch of people, and they have a very solid physics
engine (arguably the best), why not exploit that? The opposite of you, I
don't really care for NASCAR (I love the cars, but hate the fact that they
race on ovals), so I'd like to see them use that awesome physics engine on
some other series (i.e. modern F1, Rally, etc.). Clearly there is money to
be made outside of NASCAR evident by the number of F1 titles, Rally titles,
etc.

Just bought NR2002? NR2003 is right out the corner!

by Dave Henri » Sat, 30 Mar 2002 02:53:18

Probably referring to viewership and attendance in the USA.  Obviously
F1 worldwide has a larger audience, but take a survey here in the States and
ask about the Names Schumacher and Hakkenin  vs Gordon and Earnhardt it
would be no contest.  The mass market here in the STates is dominated by
Nascar.

Anyway, all I was trying to say was that they

I  agree...the more sims using the basic core engine, the lower the
developmental costs for each program.

The opposite of you, I
And that alone is a good reason to avoid those...F1 has two to three upper
crust sims and about a dozen hack efforts(plus all the console titles)  It's
a swamped market...Unless Papyrus could bring something unique to the F1 sim
market there would be little chance of dominating, and hence great financial
risk.
