Viper Racing install question

by Bill Met » Fri, 31 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I picked up Viper Racing out of my local bargain bin yesterday.  I
figured for $10 I really couldn't go wrong.  Anyway, to my horror the
installer automatically started the installation of DirectX 5 off the
CD once the game had finished installing.  Fortunately, I recognized the
DX5 icon and reset my machine before any damage was done.
I'm planning on building up a new system this weekend and will be
reinstalling VR.  Is there any way to just get the game installed without
the DX5 install automatically starting?

If I am not mistaken, DirectX sort of covers its own ***and won't install
an older version over a newer one.  Even if the installer appears to be
installing, I think it doesn't touch newer files.

Of course I am probably wrong, as usual.

You have something odd going on there.
I just re-installed Viper on two DX7a machines, and the DirectX dialog
box says something to the effect of "Detected an up to date version of
DirectX", and doesn't install anything.

You could always just let it finish and then reinstall Dx7a

I think it was the Sierra Utilities that did it Bill.
If you run the Microsoft DX Setup (DXSetup.exe), I think it just asks
you if you want to install/re-install, but doesn't check to see what
version is on there... right?
I've done it 50 times, I should remember. =8^P

In any case, if you did wind up getting 5, installing 7a over it
should take care of it.

Bill... you can let the DX 5 install run. older versions of DX will not
overwrite newer versions. To do this would require manual editing of the
registry. My suggestion would be download all of the latest DX7 drivers for
your system, then DL and install DX 7 from Microsoft..(or get it from
another source) Then install whatever you want. The DX 5 install from Viper
should not affect your system.
