They fix the problem with lacking bass, but cause GPL to crash within
a matter of seconds after beginning a face. The only way I was able to
prevent it from happening is to reduce the audio hardware
accelerations to the 2nd from lowest setting, but this also caused me
to lose a lot of the 3d sound effects in A3d enabled programs.  These
new drivers also broke Starsiege and WW2 Fighters. Strange thing is
that all three programs would crash with different error messages,
none of which mention anything pertaining to the sound card. For the
sake of experimentation, I tested the drivers on three different
systems and experienced identical results. Upon removal of the beta
reference drivers and re-installation of Diamond's, the problems went
away. Too bad the bass went with them as well.

Did you try re-installing GPL after upgrading the drivers?  and remember,
most Diamond products have drivers that are not very close to reference
drivers,
the MX-300 may just be enough Diamond and not enough Aureal to work
with Reference drivers.

Yeah I tried reinstalling the broken games with no luck. From posts in
comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.games it seems as I am not alone. No big
deal, I can keep using the older drivers and wait until Diamond tweaks
the new ones to make them more compatible, if that is the problem.
Even without the low end response, the gameport on the MX300 and the
sound just destroy the Ensoniq board I used to have:)

Had no problems running GPL. Haven't tried WW2 fighters yet (cause I can't
find the ***y CD!). Fixed a problem with Alpha Centauri crackling and
popping. There wer some MX300's released with a slightly different chip.
Perhaps your is one of them?
