It is my favourite entertainment too:) Instead of tweaking AI I usually
just choosing appropriate car, and decide whether I should qualify
or not.
Yes I agree completely. Also I usually consider AI drivers as real
people, so at the same I practice not to run them off road:)

I've tried that, too. I can never get off the line fast enough to keep in
touch with the 2 fastest cars. I always get caught behind 2 of the other 3,
and can't find a place to pass them, even though I'm faster.
I've had exactly *1* 3-lap race where I've stayed within 20 seconds of the top
2...and STILL didn't break my PB. :(

Ferrari behaves nicely at Monaco, so try using that along with Alison's
setup. Then just try and take every corner slow (which should also
make each corner rather clean) - brake early, hit every apex, stay
as close to the inside as possible etc.
If I could follow my own instructions I should be able to improve my PB
considerably. If you want to check out my current PB lap, on which I
actually did have the patience to take it easy in the Massenet, you can
find it at http://tazty.com/gpl/ (jk_mona_12875.zip). Of course I do go
long in Mirabeau, Portier and Gazometres, so don't pay too much attention
to my lines through them ;)

I knew I needed a faster Monaco time to get a negative rank, so I put Monaco
on in the Lotus, default setup (~8L fuel), and got nowhere. For the first
hour I was having a nightmare. I couldn't believe how little grip the Lotus
had at Monaco, and I couldn't get under 1:30 (the PB I was trying to beat
was 1:30.01). In fact I hardly did a single clean lap. So I switched to
the Cooper, did about 10 laps in that to build a bit of confidence and do
some clean laps.
Then I switched to the Brabham, which is pretty fast at Monaco, and has tons
of grip. Did about 10 laps in the Brabham and then switched back to the
Lotus. Within a few laps the Lotus was feeling completely difference to
drive, suddenly it felt like it had more grip and I wasn't getting as much
wheel-spin in 1st and 2nd gear. It still took about another solid hour of
trying to get into the 1:28s though. Also this was after doing about 30
laps at the Ring in the last four days, which has to help.
This is also how I did the 8:22 at the Ring, by doing some nice clean laps
in the Cooper (8:36), Brabham (8:34) and Ferrari (8:35), then going back to
the Lotus. I guess it's because in those cars you can drive the track
without having to fight the car. The Cooper is so predictable that you can
concentrate on the track, and reinforce your track knowledge, whereas in the
Lotus, every time it decides to bite you, you end up wondering if you're
actually taking the corners at the right speed, and your confidence
dissolves.
General Monaco advice - use first gear, get out of the slow corners as
quick as possible (get on the power before you've rounded the corner, even
if it's only 20% throttle). If you struggle to take the chicane flat out in
5th (something I struggle with as well) just back off the power (about 30%
lift of the throttle) in the last 1 or 2 seconds before the chicane, so the
revs are steady (not going up or down) and you'll find it much easier to
guide the car through clean. This is also the same technique for jumps at
the Ring. If you go over a jump, and release the throttle, when you land
the engine is rotating slower than the tyres just after they've landed, so
you get engine braking which makes you spin. Your engine note needs to stay
constant while you're in the air, then you'll find jumps are easy-peasy.

As for the Ring, there's nothing better than lots of track time, and recent
track time too. 30 laps done two months ago is of limited use, but 30 laps
done in the last week makes a real difference. My plan was to keep doing
5-10 laps every day, whether I improved or not, knowing that eventually, the
improved track knowledge would pay off. It took about 5 days in the end.
I also think it helped me to get some laps done in the more predictable (in
terms of how they drive) cars like the Cooper, Brabham and Ferrari. The
Cooper, in particular, is so pleasant on any track, and it never does
anything you're not expecting. That leaves you able to concentrate on the
track. Plus, since the Cooper isn't so fast, you haven't got the pressure
of trying to do a PB lap, you can just relax and drive. Try 5 or so laps in
the Cooper, and then go back to your normal car and see if it helps.
