System won't recognize V2-1000

by George Ada » Mon, 13 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I installed a 3Dfx V2-1000 PCI today, and I can't get my (antique) system to
recognize it. The computer performs fine with the original card operating via
the passthrough, so it would seem that the card, connections, and PCI slot are
OK, but the card never shows up in my device manager. It's like its not even
there. I installed the drivers supplied with the card. System specs as follows:
AMD K-6 200
Win 95   DirectX 7.0A
Sierra Screamin' 3D video card ( Rendition 1000)
32 meg ram
GMB-P57IPS Motherboard with Intel TX Chipset

I only paid $50.00 for the card (new), but I hate to waste the money.
Thanks very much in advance for any help.

No such card.  It's either a V"3" 1000 with 16 MB ram or V2 with 8 or 12 MB
ram.  If it's a V3 then it won't work with your other card, it is not an ADD
ON it's a primary vid card both 2D/3D so ditch the rendition and install the
V3 as primary.  If it's an old V2 then I don't know what the problem is,
sorry.

I had a similar problem when transplanting my Diamond Monster Voodoo1
to the Intel 810-based thing that was recently foisted on me. The card
was installed OK, the "Add Hardware Wizard" came up as it should, it
rebooted OK - but no entry in Device Manager.

What I did was to ditch the generic 3dfx drivers and go back to an old
set of Diamond Monster drivers. It now works fine. I can't account for
this, but something similar may be worth a try.

It's a V2-1000 with 8 meg. It is definitely an add on card.

Sorry George, I didn't know the old V2 was called a 1000.  My mistake.

go to system( in control panel), then device manager, then look
in sound, video and game controllers folder. There should be a
device called unknown multimedia device or something like that.
Click your right mouse button on it and select properties.
Select drive and choose update driver. Make this point to your
CD (you did get a CD didn't you?). That should work. I have the
latest drivers for this board (Directx7 non-beta) and I'll email
them to you if you need them.

Just a thought...  If you previously had a Voodoo 1 card installed in the system,
make sure the drivers for it are compleely removed from the system before
installing the V2.

System won't recognize V2-1000

Thanks for the reply. I checked device manager and the only listings under
sound, video, and game controllers are for my sound card, game port, and voice
modem. I have installed the drivers that came with the disk using the
installation routine on the disk as well as the routine in the "add hardware"
section.

Dumb question......do I need to delete the 3-D drivers for my basic video card?
(Sierra Screamin 3-D Rendition 1000) I wouldn't think so, but who knows?

I don't think you need to delete your old drivers. I have a V2
1000 and an ADI 3D card in the same system and they work happily
side by side. I have had problems with a soundcard not being
recognised and I swapped the cards in the slots and then things
sorted themselves out. You could try that. Do you have any ISA
cards in your system? Some machines share an ISA port with a PCI
port. So you may need to alter your bios and change ISA slots
too.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. I apologise for the delay in
my replay. I live in the UK and so there's probably a time lag
problem.

Good luck with your system.
