With Athlon 900s available boxed retail for $100 and falling, closeout
V5500s available for $100 and falling, SBLive! sound cards available for $50
and falling and all of this soon to be available on the used market for
fractions of THAT the solution is simple, obvious, and not terribly
expensive.

A dedicated GPL box.

Get real....and it has nothing to do with the money involved in putting
together a CPU video card and some RAM, although that in itself is
ridiculous, too.  How about you and everyone else who thinks this is a good
idea donate $500 each to the Papy programmers--we'll see a patch pretty
quickly (unless you are the only one).

There does is a AMD 1.4 ghz... Don't know or it's available on the market
yet though, if not it should be in a week or 1-2

Almost right. It's a 1 GHz "AXIA" unlocked and running at 1.4. It would go
further, but performance is "adequate" as R-R say so I haven't bothered :-)

with the D3D driver on my GeForce 2 MX. I do have 3D wheels. Reading the
thread http://www.racesimcentral.net/'m not
alone. I don't think I can use Glide with this card.

Don't jest... having GPL updated to fix this issue would be worth $500 to
me. And I'm still running an OC'd PIII-655 the moment.

your right, your NON3dfx card cannot run a glide coded game.  Your card is
made by another company other than 3dfx which is the only company to have a
chipset that runs 3dfx Glide programs.  (And yes I know all about the glide
wrappers for nvidia.)
Glide is a 3d api that was coded to run on 3dfx cards.  Nvidia can run
opengl and d3d but not Glide.

For GPL2 I'd pay $500. For GPL I'm perfectly happy maintaining the hardware
I've already got to keep it running, that ought to keep me going for another
10 years or so. When I upgrade I'm going to have to go for a new Mobo and
memory anyway, along with the cpu, possibly even a new power supply and
video card. I'm nearly all the way to a dedicated box at that point.

It's a solution that works for me.

Folks....you have got to get ONE thing through your heads.  WE here in RAS
are a very small-tiny-miniscule group.  How many GPLers are on Vroc each
night?  About 100 to 200?  No mass market company can cater to a couple of
hundred users.  IF EVERYONE here ponied up 500$ you probably couldn't even
pay the building rent where the coding work would be done.  Would it cover
the secretaries?  The accountants?  The taxes?  The benefits?  Would it
cover the $$ that Sierra and it's Parent companies would require to
supervise Papyrus?  Would the pitifully SMALL # of users here have enough
cash to pay the Papyrus Coders to rebuild the GPL engine?  Would we have
enough cash to pay for beta testing?  How about purchasing enough P4's just
to TEST the sucker...And will we have enough to cover the losses incurred on
Papyrus' next project while they put that aside to rework a game that was a
HUGE FINANCIAL FLOP 3 years ago?
Folks....asking Papyrus to continue development of GPL is just as silly as
demanding Rendtion support on N4.
Can I be any more plain?   Building your own dedicated box with 1.33ghz
processor and current generation vidcard makes FAR FAR more sense than
expecting Sierra to release funds for further work on GPL.

I don't believe this!  I must have the worst timing ever.  I just ordered a P4
1.7 with a GF3 from ABS today!!  It comes with an MSI mobo.  Does anybody know
if I can underclock with this board?  This sucks!!!!!!!

You might try returning it as unsatisfactory.

"Thank you for sending this new computer.
The packing was very nice. No dents at all.
However, because it is far too fast to run my
demanding applications, I will have to take advantage
of your warrentee offer because of this machines
excessive speed.
Sincerely, "

Luckily, they probably don't have a customer service

so you should be in!

We're completely in the dark about what kind of a task it would be to cure
the 1.7 problem, but I certainly think this mad little GPL community could
get together enough money to fund a few weeks of a programmer's time...
and I'm sure there's enough goodwill within Papy to ease the process
along.

However Papyrus aren't independent, and even if they were, I'm sure
they've got many better things to do with their time.

Besides, I think there are relatively few people prepared to *gamble*
significant amounts of money on a patch... and it certainly would be a
gamble.
