GPL reinstallation advice, please.

New computer is up and running, including 2nd HD from old machine. This HD
includes a full backup of my GPL folder, complete with patches, tracks,
***pits etc.

In order to make setting it all up as easy as possible, can I simply install
GPL as normal from the disk, then overwrite the 'fresh' directory with the
old one? Will this tell WinXP everything it needs to know?

Any advice appreciated,

Cheers,

Rick.

I've never used XP, but I have copied my entire GPL folder to many a 98 and
2K machine, and I've never needed to run the installer. I don't believe
there's anything crucial in the Registry. Some 3rd party utilties (Replay
Analyzer, GRE, etc.) may have trouble finding GPL, but you can just tell
them where it is.

Try it without installing from CD first, to save yourself some time. If it
doesn't work, you can always use the CD.

yes Rick, just install it as normal then copy your old directory over the
top and it will be fine.

it will run fine but if you try to install new tracks with the trackinstall
program that is usually supplied you will have to browse to find gpl.exe -
pretty minor really :)

I do it all the time with a "preferred" install which I've saved on the
second hard drive.  Format a partition, install Windows XP, install the
"basic" GPL, then over-write all the folders with the tree structure
previously saved.  Works like a charm.

Hi. Chris is right, installing GPL is not necessary (install does not
alter the registry in any way or place files outside the sierra
folder). It works if you just copy the whole sierra/gpl folder to the
fresh systems.

I was close, though.  I do the little step of installing the "basic" GPL
before copying over the folder structure and files.  Just feel a little more
stability is added by doing that.  8-)
