Um, excuse me, but you embed a link in a newsgroup, that says "WOW!  Check
This:"  That starts a download right away (deep linked) instead of
displaying a web page?

Are you NUTS :)

Could be innocent, but no one in their right mind is going to continue with
the download.  Not under these circumstances :)

You're right of course, Larry, but a look at the link would show it's a zip file containing a new WR at the Ring (7:44.75 - sheesh!)

Congrats to Greger; what a nice present for Barty.  I'm sure he'll enjoy it.  Best served cold, eh?  ;-)

True enough, but it is a ZIP file. If it were a document or an EXE I could
see being alarmed, but you do scan your ZIPs for viri before opening them,
correct?

That alarmest of an attitude is what these virus-maker-***terrorists want
to happen, everyone to be scared to death to actually USE the internet. I
ain't giving in...

Just so you know, it checked out with no problems. Now just to get home to
GPL so I can watch it, hehe.

Yes, I scan my stuff thank you.

And it's not being alarmist hesitating to download a deep-linked file from a
posting in a newsgroup that says simply "WOW!  Check This:"

Think about it.

I saw the Zip file.  I know what it says it was.

My point is the post chose the worse possible way to get people to download
the file.

Or, maybe not.  Maybe we HAVEN'T learned anything.

Either way, I digress...

Scan it or shut the hell up twit.  We don't need people like you trying to protect us from ourselves

Actually, if you look at all the people wandering into my shop asking "I
have a virus on my PC, even though I have Norton AV which I updated only
7 months ago, can you help me get rid of it ?", I think the evidence
suggests otherwise, people need to be protected from themselves.......

Beers and cheers

What is the idea of scanning zip file?
Btw, I like having direct link, so I don't have to go through
the web-site.

Haven't learned what?

Last time I checked, opening a zip file couldn't do any damage to
Windows.  If it could, then just download/unzip the file in a real
operating system first to check its integrity.

But how many people have multiple systems with different OS's?
And Windows works just FINE for probably 95% of the people out there...<g>

It starts a download immediately?  What newsreader are you using?

Mine just displayed it as a hyperlink, and waited for me to do
something about it (my first response was to expand the thread
and read the first few responses ;-)

I might go and download it later, but then again since I was
stuck around 8:25 last time I tried, I might not!
