Holy shit. The next gen of consoles looks to have graphics abilities
that come very close to photorealism. Let's just hope the physics are
there too but I'm not holding my breath.

And why oh WHY can't any makers of console driving games include a real
in car view, complete with wheel, dashboard, instruments, etc? Someone
please tell me....

Well, unlike most racing games on PC, like GTR or any of the Nascar or F1
sims, which only have a handful of cars, most console racers like Gran
Turismo, Forza and Enthusia have hundreds of cars, making it very, very time
consuming to model each and every car's interior. I also think that most
(not all) console players don't mind not having a proper in-car view, making
it even more difficult for console developers to justify including them.

Yeah but if you take GT4.. the insides are modeled anyway...? so why not ad
a standard dash etc etc...?

That is amazing. Another year or so for PC sims, and that's about it I
think.

We may be closer than ever before but I cant help laugh at the number of
times Ive heard that PC *** is dead the last 15 years.  Mark Twain comes
to mind ;)

They are quite something, but I've heard that some of the E3 demos were
pre-rendered.  Not sure about this one, though.

No shit, even just a generic behind the wheel display layout would suffice
me, that is personally...

1.5ish hours of Playstation3 presentation. Thankfully you can skip forward
through the stream. Lot of very impressive stuff though.

Who knows, with the stagnation of PC CPU speed it may well be that
game-specific hardware is the only real way forward.

Oops. That's what you get for copying stuff off forums. Let's try that

Hi all,

Although impressive, what struck me as extremely odd, was the state of
the demo's shown.

My question/gripe can be summarised as follows and applies to GT, F1,
Killzone, etc.  I haven't seen all the demos.

If one were developing for a new platform, basically first thing that
will work would be basic stuff like the engine running, 1 car, 1 track,
get the physics working, etc.  In the GT version, they show numerous
tracks with high textures, many cars, motion captured people, all
running at superb frame rates.  Is this not unusual??  This would be
okay for a game in near final stages of development, but my guess is
that GT won't be available immediately upon launch or am I mistaken.
Remember the whole thing about a car in GT2 taking x amount of time to
model and the same car in GT3 taking much longer ?  with the detail on
offer on the ps3, surely similar logistics apply?

the formula one game seemed to have a number of tracks + cars modelled
to an acceptable level of detail.  physics looked arcadey, but that's
okay for now if its alpha alpha code.

in my opinion, the graphical engines in display were just a tad too far
advanced on this new technology (cell) and videocard combo.

of course, the demo's all have to bow down to the killzone2 demo.  oh
my word...unbelievable and certainly too polished for an incomplete
game.  i can't believe that the engine and graphics and polish for a
game that's a year or more away.  all the alpha code for games
typically does not resemble final quality in any way.  how come this
looks so good?

am i just being too nitpicky?? me?? naah, can't be.

jawdropping moments from the demo that made the downloads worthwhile.

1) most of the killzone2 demo
2) the camera panning back at the end of the vision gt demo showing the
pits as the cars pulled in for the pitstops.

in any case.  if that's the graphical quality we can expect, next year,
then i am gonna start saving now...I don't believe that the PC is
anywhere near that level of detail now or a year from now, and
certainly not at a price point I can afford.  XBox360? not even close.
MS better hope that the PS3 demos are smoke and mirrors.

dual side by side 1080p displays??? *faint*

regards,
istoff

There is extremely good chance that these demos were pre-rendered. It's a
common E3 practice.
