EA Superbike Runtime Error

I just paid $40 for this game.  It installed fine, but when I start it I get a
runtime error that says "abnormal program termination".  Does anybody have a
clue what the problem is?  I downloaded what I hoped was a runtime fix from the
MS website, but that didn't help either.
