Do you get better speed with rendition or 3dfx? I can only make the game
driveable with 95% of the graphics in 3dfx with my p-166, 32 megs of RAM,
voodoo 1

Well now, without starting a whole new Rendition v.s. 3Dfx debate, I'd go
with the Rendition. I gather your talking about GLP, right? Well Here's what
I discovered just this weekend. My system is a PII333 _not_ overclocked but
running at the correct speed and after substantial testing with my VOODOO-II
12 megs  and my new THRILLER-3D w/ 8 megs, the Rendition runs GLP MUCHO
faster. Yes, I do have the very latest drivers for both cards as well as
WIN98. I'm talking about a difference as much as 5-10 FPS!

I simply went to each track with all graphics options set to the max, 19 AI
cars, detail bias set to 50% and started a race at the back of the grid. At
each and every track the Rendition proved to be faster.

Just remember, this is on my system so it does'n mean SQUAT on your PC!

I'm talking about Grand Prix Legends as in GPL not GLP! I can't type to
well.

rendition is faster when hosting multiplayer or with ai cars.  otherwise
voodoo2 is plenty fast.  my stealth 2 though is not fast enough for 800x600

On my 200mmx, Diamond Stealth 220s, 2 12 meg Voodoo2 (SLI), GPL ran at
about 25 fps at 1028x768(practice) Lower resolutions didn't speed it up
much. Some graphics turned off. Yesterday, following Alison Hine's
advice, I installed an 8 meg Thriller. It now runs at 32 fps. Much
better in races. I just ran a 19 opponent race, quite playable.

Opps, I meant it now gets 36 fps in practice.

Sal
Interesting points. I'm still trying to find a rendition card in the UK to
do a back-to-back so I can't comment in detail but with the Voodoo 2 it is
very important to disable VSYNC. Try it and see whether you still find the
Rendition card faster. Slightly OT, you should also investigate clocking
your P2 333. I'm running mine at a bus speed of 83Mhz (=416) on a Gigabyte
BX with 66Mhz 10ns SDRAM and it's rock solid (You'll need to change your CAS
setting in BIOS from 2 or AUTO to 3). Cooling is not an issue with the 333.
As a first move you may want to try 75Mhz (=375) (No BIOS changes
necessary). You'll find this boosts GPL performance in general and the
Voodoo 2 in particular. Again, you may find that the Rendirtion is no longer
faster.

You might be want to check out the Hyperstimulator home page. They recently
did a back to back comparison of booth of these cards (using GPL, natch) and
have a quite nice run down of the results.

Here are some numbers for those trying to determine what card to buy for
GPL. I have an PII300 with an ASUS P2B and 128meg Ram. Nothing is over
clocked here. (YET)

All of the tests were performed with everything (graphics) on and a 19
car field. The pits numbers were performed with a new race selected
every time as to not get conflicting numbers as AI drivers would exit
out to practice. Their were three tests performed under each card
varying from 0% detail bias, 50% detail bias and then 100% detail bias.

Rendition:
Hercules Thriller AGP 8 meg
0 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 24 to 25
Sitting on the line - FPS = 35 to 36

50% Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 22 to 23
Sitting on the line - FPS = 19 to 20

100 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 15 to 16
Sitting on the line - FPS = 14

3DFX
STB BlackMagic Voodoo2 12meg
0 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 23 to 24
Sitting on the line - FPS = 23 to 24

50 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 19 to 20
Sitting on the line - FPS = 16

100 % Detail Bias
Sitting in the Pits - FPS = 11 to 12
Sitting on the line - FPS = 11 to 12

The numbers indicate that the Rendition card  performs a little better
with FPS outscoring in every situation. In my opinion the Thriller looks
a little prettier as well. The 3DFX card performs well and looks a
little smoother, but is a little washed out looking. The sim is very
playable with either. If you are a Sierra sim racing fan get a Thriller
8meg for your 2D 3D combo. If you like all the other games out there as
well get a Voodoo2 for your second card. The Voodoo2 really shines with
QuakeII, Unreal, Freespace etc....

Thanks

Aint' that a damned fine motherboar?

I just replaced an Iwill PIILS with an Asus P2B.  What a difference!

The fact that Asus codes some 40% of the Award BIOS themselves really
shows.  This is the fastest booting PC, and the most stable, I've ever
used.
